Is This True?!

I read this on a Ruger mk II pistol forum, but is it true?

Without a special permit, fitting a shoulder stock to a handgun with a barrel length shorter than 16 inches is a big no-no. I'm not
sure exactly what it takes to get the permit, but if I recall correctly it is prohibitively expensive. (You will notice that the
conversion kits to add a shoulder stock to 1911 and other types of handguns include a barrel longer than 16 inches.)

If it is true, why? What would be the advantage to making a gun harder to conceal? I know it would add to the accuracy of the gun but other than that? Why would that make it illegal?

Oh yea, and if its not illegal, where can I get a stock for a Beretta 92/96, Or a 16 inch barrel as well if it is? :D

Why? why are folding stocks, flash hiders, and bayonet lugs bad things? Why can a shotgun barrel be 18" but not 17 and 7/8"? There is very little logic to most of the gun laws on the books.

If you want something like a long barreled beretta, check this out:

Why? Because our 'Gubment' doesn't trust us rebellious, free-thinking, trouble makers. They worry they won't have a job if we teach them the same lesson we taught the British awhile back.

Why?

Because politicians realized that the sheeple, who wanted them to stop crime, didn't know that having their freedoms abridged wasn't going to stop crime, but would keep getting them re-elected.:barf:

It's only a $200 fee. You must get the permit before you affix the stock and you have to be sure your state allows short barreled rifles. Aside from that, the worst thing seems to be letting ATF know you are a hardcore gun lover. :)

If you just have a need to own a stocked handgun, I think there is an exception for any gun originally made to accept a shoulder stock or a replica of same.
This would include Broomhandle Mausers, Some HighPowers, and I think Buntlines.
There may be more and I could be wrong (I'm pretty good at that, having had LOTS of practice) so check it out before you spend money.

There are specific exceptions for some guns that were designed to accept shoulder stocks, and certain replicas of the stocks, but it's quite limited. It certainly doesn't cover all guns that were designed to accept shoulder stocks and all replicas of same!

Luger p08's are also covered under the exemption.
As for having a modern pistol with a stock, you can't.

The only trend that I've noticed with gun control laws is that they only seem to affect things that look cool.
Other than that, there is absolutely no rhyme, reason, or logic behind them.
:barf:

Caliban, another reason to abolish the NFA. Not only is it unconstitutional, inane, and immoral, it prevents the gunshop commando or those overtaken with the "Iwannacoolgun" virus (poor buggers) from putting a rifle stock on his pistol (hmmm, maybe there is some good out of the NFA--naw, abolish it anyway).

It is somewhat true. If you want to add a stock to your pistol, you must fill out a request to manufacture a short-barreled rifle on a Form 1 along with a $200 tax. There is no permit involved, unless you want to go into business dealing or making NFA weapons.

KSFreeman-

I agree. The whole thing is rather dumb. While I can't logically give a reason for why I would want a pistol with a detachable stock, I still can't ignore the fact that they are cool due to their being somewhat unusual.

Still, I temper that with the fact that there are far too many guns out there that I have specific needs for, ie a Free Pistol, Standard Pistol, and some sort of compact. (That's just off the top of my head.)

That isn't even going into rifles and such, and I know that somewhere along the line, my interest in competitive rifle shooting (uncomfortable jacket and all) may get rekindled.

Even after all the guns that I can come up with a justified need for, there are still a number of fairly unusual pieces that I simply want for pure 'cool factor.'
(This is, IMNHO one of the better facets of capitalism, that it isn't based on pre-determined needs, so much as it is based around what an individual wants.)
But, well, now I'm blathering.

Hi, guys,

I often think that the reason illegal stuff looks "cool" is BECAUSE it is illegal. There are always guys who just want to violate the law or pretend to do so because it is sort of fun. I have known high school kids who carried bags of dried leaves around pretending it was MJ, just to look "cool". It's part of being a kid.

Of course, if you violate the law and get caught, it is still "cool"; in fact it is so cool you get to go to the cooler.

FWIW, most shoulder stock pistols never worked out very well, especially if fired without ear protection. You haven't had real fun until you have had a .45 auto with stock go off a foot from your left ear.

As for the current laws, I doubt we will ever get them changed for the better; we will have to fight hard to keep them from getting worse. So, if you are 18, quit bitching, get off your duff, and register to vote. Then vote!

Jim
