i read somewhere that removing the roll mark from the slide of a semi-auto pistol was illegal.is that true?

The slide is not the "gun", therefore you can do anything you want with it ! The receiver or frame is the "gun" ,this is where the serial number is. The serial number must not be tampered with.

the roll mark i was referring to that has the model ie eg 1911-a1 or minimax45,not the serial number that on all of my guns is on the frame or receiver.

Welllll.....

Do you own a Ruger MK I/II/III? You would _think_ the "gripframe" where the trigger and magazine well is at is the "gun" but you would be wrong. On the Ruger .22 pistol, the piece of round metal that attaches to the rear of the barrel is the serial numbered part. On an AR-15, it makes sense, the trigger and magazine well part is "the gun." But on an FN FAL, that part is just the lower receiver while the part that attaches to the barrel is the "gun" and has the serial number.

It just frigging depends on what gun we are talking about. Some guns have the serial number in multiple places. Like my P7 has it on the frame and then on the slide. I could let it be removed or covered up on the slide if it was refinished. But not on the frame since that's the "legal identifying mark."

Pays to know your particular gun and which number on it is actually THE serial number. S&W revolvers are covered with numbers all over the place!

Good advice from tulsamal. You can't legally deface or alter the serial number - knowing which one is the one seems to be a bit of a trick.

Though not illegal, I think it would be very unwise to alter the caliber marking on the barrel.

no nothing like that

no nothing like that...during a recent refinish with parkerizing and wheeler engineering cerama coat, the model name that was on the slide became obscured because i used an off brand parkerizing kit and it nearly ate the slide.....i caught it just in time but the model name was gone. the frame like all of my other 1911's has the serial number and the name of the importer stamped on it. this is stainless and was not subjected to the parkerizing finish.
there was never any information other than the model name on the slide so it looks like i am ok....unless any of you guys has information to the contrary.

Which one, maybe there is someone here who can test it and get a recommendation NOT to use that brand or get a name of a good brand to use. I do not do my own smithing, I went to the university for the mechanically DEclined.:D But the info might be useful to someone else.

I'm sure somebody will correct me if I'm wrong, but I seem to remember reading in some BATFE reg somewhere that it is also illegal to remove the importers name on milsurps.

give me a couple

give me a couple of days to look thru my credit charge bills....i ditched the remainder and bought some lauer weaponry stuff that worked fine.
so it looks like i am good...still got the serial number and the importers info on the frame.

I know of one company that removes all manufacturer marks from a converted HK-94 and replaces them with the original MP5 markings. ATF has approved their process. I guess since the registered sear is the machinegun, everything else is academic.
