Is this normal…?

So I just purchased my first hunting rifle - a Weatherby Vanguard S2 and bought a Nikon Prostaff 3.5-14x40 scope to go with it. However, I bought these items at Cabela's and they offer a free scope mount/boresight with the purchase of any scope. Now I may just be being paranoid, but as soon as I picked up the gun and looked at it I noticed that something seemed to be…off. Couldn't really put my finger on it until I noticed that the back scope mount base is a different size than the front one (its a few mm higher and much longer than the one in front). As such it looks like the scope is pointing "down" instead of pointing flush with the barrel. Is it possible that the guys at Cabelas screwed up and used two different bases on accident or is this something that is fairly common?

I know some pictures would help and i'll try to get some uploaded in the next hour here, but its just really bugging me. The back scope mount base also "hangs" or sticks out over the bolt and it just looks really shotty all around. Any thoughts?

It isn't normal unless it's a 20MOA sloped mount.

And unless you specifically asked for this, I would take it back as well. So they either took a short cut and put mismatched parts on it, or put on a specialized mount that most shooters will never have a need for.
 
I think you need to take it back. Ruger M77 for one that I know of does have different height rings from rear to front but I am not aware that your rifle does.

Trust your instinct and return the rifle and get it right.
 
The Vanguard does use different bases for the front and rear positions (when using a two-piece system).
But... I wouldn't be surprised if they swapped them (causing them to fit improperly), or used the wrong ones.

If that scope has even the slightest hint of being tweaked, scratched, or otherwise damaged from the idiot install, demand a new one. If they overtightened the screws with misaligned scope rings, it could have bent or dented the scope tube. Their problem, not yours!

If that's the case, I also think they might have installed the bases reversed.
That they couldn't see the light-of -sight misalignment just by visual inspection is
troubling.

(If they center bore-sighted to a spot on the wall 10 ft away, of course the scope's
tilted down. It should bore-sight ~1.5" (scope height) above that 10-ft spot.

The rear base on a Vanguard is taller than the front base as the rear of the receiver is not as high as the front. Same thing as a Remington 700 and in fact the (two piece) bases are interchangeable between the two brands. (Weatherby Vanguard and Remington 700) The front and rear base cannot be interchanged as they have different hole spacing. If you are still not happy with the rifle by all means take it back. I am sure they can sort it out for you.

Could you tell us how some of this stuff works out inherentlyNOOB?

You've had trouble with the rifle feeding and trouble with Hornady ammo and we've not got a reply as to how things turned out. Not a huge problem but inquiring minds want to know.
