i bought an FAL yesterday, took it out and fired some rounds this afternoon, it throws the brass about 15-20 feet , is this normal? do i need to adjust the gas system, it's between 4 and 5 right now. and if it does need adjusted , how do you adjust the system? and i noticed the case mouths on the empties were dented pretty bad, my mini dents them sometimes, but not as bad as this.

15-20 feet maby a little on the far side of the ok range. Might want to adjust the gas to a solid 5 and try it. Just turn the ring that the numbers are on. Some turn with heavy finger pressure.

A lot of the kit FALs are sweet with lower or higher numbers but 5 is a good target. When tryin unknown or known hot ammo....do the first shot at 9 or so. Probably won't cycle, go down a number for next shot.....work down till you get bout 15 foot ejection. If first crack is with too low a number, may pull case head off. Once dialed, leave it alone till makin an ammo change.

I try to keep mine as high as possible too. I'm not sure if this is reality or fiction, but I really feel the recoil is less the higher you go. The felt recoil change could be so miniscule that it isn't noticeable, but I swear I feel a difference.

My FAL functions flawlessly when I can get the shells flying about 15-20 feet away. Sounds like you're fine.

Follow the gas system adjustment as outlined in the FAQ on FAL files. Basically, do this:

1. Close the system the whole way down. Open the chamber on an EMPTY magazine.

2. load one through the ejection port and fire. The action will NOT hold open.

3. Open one notch.

4. Load one and fire.

Repeat until the hold-open engages. This means you have enough gas going back through to cycle the action. Now open it ONE more notch to ensure reliability. if you're going into Afghanistan, open it one more again for UTTER reliability.

If the gun is new do NOT be surprised if your gas system setting changes as the gun breaks in. I had to have mine almost all of the way open when I first got mine...it has since closed considerably. Its a good idea to make sure you have the gas port as 'closed' as possible while still functioing reliably. Easier on the weapon.
