Yes to all of the above - I think the serial number would place it toward the 1956 end of that range. The serial number is on the butt, the number in the frame cutout has no significance.

Here is a pic of mine, serial 420XXX. I bought it in January for $225 off an ad in Armslist.
When I posted it on the S&W forum, a member told me Smith &Wesson told him his, serial 4212XX, was shipped 1957-58.
I'm pulling for 1957...birth year gun for me.

WOW very nice revolvers there. Love the pics guys. I'm already getting myself worked up for another model 10. I have a nice 10-7. I think a fine example pre-10 like yours is something to look out for.

It may be a "pre-10", but it is as close as can be to a "model 10".
S&W began using model numbers in 1957. There are lots of examples that were made without the model number marking being stamped after 1957.

I'm assuming there's a "C" in front of those numbers? If so, according to SCSW, that would place it in the 1957 to 1959 period; the range was C402924 to C429740. If you do the interpolation, I think a date closer to the end of 1958 is more likely for your gun, but that's only a guess. You should be able to get the actual year with a phone call to S&W.

I've had several of those over the years...sold or traded them all off as narrowed my "collection" down, except for this one.

Made in 1955, it came with the box, in what I believe to have been unfired condition. I've fired about a dozen rounds through it and it shoots just fine.
