a local store has the remington 700 VLS on sale for $469.99 with tax it should be right around $500 , is this a good buy, the gun is new.

Chesty, if it's a .308, it is a good deal...IF you like the rifle.
If it's a .223, and tyou like it, it still is a good deal............fwiw

Two things

First, quit using that "quote." Hitler did NOT say that and it just hurts our cause to use false information like the anti's.

Second, yes that's a good price. Ammo will be fairly expensive and the barrel won't last as long as with the .223 rem or .308 win. Check ammo prices and think about the number of shots a year you will put through it. Lots? Then look for a .223 or .308. A few (250 or less/year) then the .22-250 will be great. Course, if you're rich then go .22-250 and don't look back.
