Is this a good deal? Sierra .308 150gr FMJBT.

Here is the deal boys and girls. I just saw an ad tonight in Shotgun News where this company is blowing out a bunch Sierra first run bullets. They are offering Sierra .308 150 gr. FMJBT for $8.95 a box. The cheapest I could find them was for like $13.00 a box. Here is the deal. If you buy 10000, they are only $6.71 a box. The Sierra website offered them for over $18! I am figuring that I could reload .308 and .30-06 for the rest of my life with 10,000 bullets.

Here is the dillema. I can also find .308 147 gr. FMJBT military surplus pulled for $55 a thousand. That is about $100 cheaper. But now that I think about it, the company offering the Sierra's only charges $4.75 insurance and handling. No shipping charge! I figure a 214 (150 grains X 10000 / 7000 grns per pound) pound shipment with UPS would cost about $100!

This is the question. Have any of you shot the Sierra 150 gr. FMJBT? Have any of you also shot the mil surplus 147s? What is the accuracy difference? I have shot Winchester 147s out of my M1A and they did pretty darn good. Should I jump on this deal? Please tell me before you make the call to the people yourself. I want to get in on 10,000 of those before they run out. Please get back to me ASAP. I feel like droping $670 worth of bullets to last me a life time. I might have to bury a 1000 at a time around the back yard. And I was going to buy two CMP Garands. :D I guess they might have to wait.

Just ordered 1000 this very night - I figured that's not going too far out on a limb. Have had good luck with the 168 MatchKing and a couple of their .223 bullets so I figured it was worth a try.

A friend of mine toured the Sierra factory a while back and discovered the REAL sweet deal - 55 gal. drums full of seconds, mostly just blemished, which they sell by the pound (or ton as the case may be). So now if you can just arrange a little road trip from CA with a U-Haul....

Surplus 147's

These are great for plinking, but that is about all. I think I get 3-5" groups in a bolt rifle. I use them in my FAL and M1A for fun shoots only.

What's tha addr of this company?

The really big deal with bullet accuracy, despite the obvious things like concentricity, etc., is the BASE of the bullet... if the base is "off center" the bullet will swing off-axis as it exits the bore, and that will result in a corresponding error on the target. Pulled bullets tend to have damage to the edges of the bases, so they're pretty much just good for plinking...

If I remember correct, you are around LA area, right?
Would you willing to share with me for that 10,000 bullet?

Good point John!

I am going to make an offer, anyone else in the Southern California area (Fresno to Greater LA) that might be interested in going in bulk with me, e-mail me and let me know. We can use the trust and honor thing or if you want to pay me with Pay Pal first, that should protect me and you. We can work something out. You may also mix and match the different ammo bought as long as it adds up to the quantities listed. So if you want to go in bulk with me, let me know. Here is the listing of bullets they are offering and the more you order, the cheaper they get. http://www.grafs.com/specials.cfm#sierra They offer even bigger discounts for 5000 and 10000. See the December 20 Shotgun News for more info.

Anyone else want in? Respond by 12 noon at the latest on Wednesday 12/19/01. Even then it might be too late.

For a .308 rifle, this might be a good deal.

I gotta resubscribe to SGN. For my shooting, the price sounds good, but the bullet weight is somewhat light for the long range 30-06 shooting I do a lot of. I'm talking 200yds+ with Garands and 03A3's. For this I use Sierra's 180gr Matchking HPBT in the Garands, and for the 03, the 200gr Matchking HPBT. My only long range FMJ is the original USGI FMJBT 173gr. Truth is, I bought bulk shipments of both weight Matchkings in the 70's and picked up the FA FMJBT stuff in a 1000 round lot about 4 years ago...even tho I shoot a lot of long range stuff, I'm likely to not run out for a long time yet.
150gr sounds a little light for the type of shooting I'm into with the 06's but for the NATO 308, should suffice.
