Friends, I am in the market for a revolver, preferably a 3-4" barrel chambered in either a 357 or 38 spec. Recently, I found a local posting for someone sellign a Smith and Wesson Model 36 with a 3" barrel chambered in 38 special for $350. According to the seller, it has a low round count and has Pacmyer grips. Is this a decent price to pay, am I underpaying, or overpaying? Aside from asking for pictures, and examining it for significant rust or pitting, are there any other questions I should ask before driving an hour to meet this person? I appreciate any ideas, since I have never bought a gun directly from an individual before...

Where are the original grips? And how is the cylinder gap? The factory smith grips fetch a pretty penny these days. It's a very good price if it's in good condition.

The model 36 with a 3' barrel is very collectable. The chief is normally seen with the 2" barrel and is very concealable especially with the original round butt wood grips. In excellent condition even with the pachmeyers the 3" version should be a steal.
Cost will vary depending on what part of the country you live in. For some reason both the smith and colt snubbies are beginning to catch on again, because they're better than the new ones , especially sans key to lock and unlock it.
I know more than a few retired LE who are weeping today, cause they regret letting their reliable off duty to be seperated from them for a sum of $25.My DS still gets a chance to get out for it's occassional well deserved walks. If it's in exc cond and functions properly GRAB IT QUICKLY![/B]

The serial# would have to be run through NCIC. If you're buying privately then copy down the serial# or let the owner write it down, but then verify it. Go to your local police authority and let them run the number. It takes less than a minute for the results. Good luck.
