Is There Any Validity To The Claim That An Altered Defensive Weapon Can Cause Legal Problems?

It seems that anytime someone mentions doing a little custom work to a carry gun, someone else chimes in to issue caution stating that any alteration to a carry gun can cause legal issues if used in a defensive situation. My question is this....Has there been any cases that can be cited with specific examples of someone actually facing jail time or forced to pay in a civil suit for using a carry gun in a defensive situation that has had custom work done to it?

After shooting my Glocks today I can say I would like to put some Ghost trigger parts in them to help them out a bit, but am a bit leery if there is any truth to this.
