Is there any cheap way to tell barrel wear?

I just got an unreal buy on an old BAR chambered in caliber .270. The gun appeared to have been carried a lot. I have a feeling it was shot a good bit also.

I gave it a good-ole Kroil and Barnes CR10 cleaning when I got it home. It took many passes with the nylon brush and about 30-40 patches before she came clean.

The question; Is there an inexpensive way to determine barrel and throat wear? I just tried eyeballing it with a bore-light and, can't see any appreciable difference by comparing it to my other rifles. .


Switching gears: Is it OK to use UN-chlorinated BRAKE cleaner to blast gunk outta our rifles.
 
I think we need a gunsmith to weigh in on this subject.
But, a borescope will give you some insight into barrel and throat wear, from a layman's point of view (me, the layman).
Me, I'd just shoot the rifle and see how it groups.

The cheap way is to get a factory bullet and invert in into the crown of the barrel:the bullet should stop short of the crimp groove 1/4" if the bullet stop and the neck of the brass case the barrel and crown are too far gone.
I would also remove the bolt and look at the barrel up at the light and see how good the lands and grooves are and check for rust or pitting.

That BAR in 270 - don't give it a thought - those rifles are badsically hunting rifles and 25,000 to 35,000 rounds wouldn't hurt it - it's probably only got 1000 rds. through it - cleaning it was the best thing you ever did for it.

I'll second what Harry said. Even if it was shot a lot, it probably has no more than a few hundred rounds through it, maybe 1,000. A 270 won't hurt the barrel in that amount of shooting. Take it out and shoot it and see how it groups.
