Is there a Such thing as 00 Steel Shot?

Sodapop may have been intrigued by my request for information on getting some 00 steel for practice, although with steel bird shot. I didn't know if it were made or not, only that I didn't want to be working with lead.
 
I am just curios because a shop near me has a display of regular shot putting dents in a steel plate at 50yds and a steel shot passing threw it. Its probable 1/16 of an inch thick. I wondered why anyone would use steel birdshot for deep penetration? Whats the purpose of Steel shot or is it just for environmental reasons?

IIRC the whole point of steel shot was to keep birds and whatnot from eating lead pellets.

Lead is much denser than steel and would retain speed better than steel shot of the same size.
