is there a 7.62 G3 type rifle out there?

I need a new rifle. I really like 7.62x39. My question is: Does anyone know of anything like the G3, CETME, or FN FAL that fires 7.62x39? Or even anything remotely like the AR-15 that fires 7.62x39? I have no interest what-so-ever in .308. This is not an option. I already have an AK-47 so that's out too.
Maybe the rifle in question doesn't have to be too much like the mentioned rifles. If anyone knows of any other rifle that fires 7.62x39 suggestions would be appreciated, thanks.
Again, MUST be 7.62x39. Not .308 and not an AK or SKS.

I'm desperate, ask a friend for advice on this one. I really really need some guidence on this.

As far as I know, Ruger makes/has made Mini-14 as Mini-30 in 7.62x39. I also remember reading Colt made AR15 in 7.62x39 some years ago. Also, prototypes and/or short production batches of many other weapons have been made in 7.62x39 by at least FN, SIG, and HK (please correct if I am wrong), but those are probably rare collectors items now.

There are uppers in 7.62x39 available for the AR-15. Pretty much everything else in that caliber comes in an AK-type action, except for the Ruger Mini-30.

Sacco583,

Why the obsession with the 7.62 x 39 ??

Stipulating the one caliber (it's good and cheap.. that's why I shoot it), why does it have to be in something other than an AK or SKS... ???

Kinda' like wanting a Ford, but insisting that it look like a Chevy, drive like a Chevy, and use Chevy parts. :)

No flame here, just curious...

Heckler und Koch produced the G3 in several different calibers, including .308, .223, and short Russian. The 7.62x39mm was cataloged under a couple of different numbers. It wasn't a big seller.

The short Russian is a weak round. The G3 is heavy and has the silly pistol grip. If you want something in short Russian, buy a CKC. Much lighter.

If you want a rifle, get a rifle. Buy an M14 copy (Springfield is a good one) and a truck load of magazines, then buy a couple of others.

A Hk in 7.62x39 is not gonna hapen since they only made a handful for testing and none of those were for sale. There's probably one in the "Grey Room".

I'd reccomend sucking it up and going with a FAL in .308. Once you shoot it, your AK might start taking second seat.

I said this in a differant post but...I love 7.62x39. It's very effective for blowing up a wide veriety of house hold appliances. There is a very big boom and then a big hole (or lots of depris). There's something about .223 that just doesn't do it for me. The fact that nothing can withstand the impact of 7.62x39 and the low low cost is what makes me want a rifle in 7.62x39. I already have an AK and would like something that perfoms more like the AR...something more tactical than the AK. Or something that I can mount a scope on and hit computer cases and printers from 500+ yards. I don't like .308 just because of the cost. I would love a G3 clone (I've seen tons sold for under $500) that shoots 7.62x39. But not .308. I like to go out into the desert for a whole day and let lose. I'll expend anywhere from 200-500 rounds easily. I could do a lot more if I had something big (like a refridgerator, hahahahaha) to shoot at...or a car...hmmmmm.....

So, that's the main reason for asking. Big boom and low cost = happiness and fun for all.

Sounds like you are looking at an AR in 7.62X39 or a Mini 30. Of course there is the full custom route if you have the $$ and the ambition.

Destructo, I have conflicting H und K info. Went beyond prototype but not many sold, despite cataloging. I've seen a grand total of 2 (may have been same gun). I'll call Kent (or somebody) for a ruling.

Check out the 11th Edition of W.H.B. Smith's Small Arms of the World. On page 44 there is an illustration of the Rheinmetall RH4 rifle which is essentially a HK G3 in 7.62x39. It even takes the AK magazine. The HK version is given as the HK 32 and there is supposedly a Sig 510-3. According to the book, these were prototype guns.

Ok. So I guess I need to simplify things a little. I can't buy fullt auto'd rifles, nor a prototype. My budget ends at $1000. So, anything outside these paramiters is useless to me. Thanks a lot for all the suggestions, really. But does anyone know of rifle that fires 7.62x39 that fits the discription? And why is it so hard to find such a gun? WHY?!?!? I just want a rifle in 7.62x39...is that so wrong?

ok ok ok. I'll do it. That actually sounds really cool. Next question:

Where do I get a 7.62x39 upper for an AR-15? I would only want 7.62x39, NOT .308 (7.62 NATO, right?). no no no, I need 7.62x39. Are they hard to come by or expensive? And, do I need do something special for the lower? a standard AR lower is not going to take an AK mag, right? What would I need to do to make such a rifle?

I thought I posted "buy a CKC" earlier if you want a short Russian weapon. I'll repeat, buy a CKC. There--now they'll listen to me.

I made calls last night. Both Gary and Destructo are correct. Protos, however H und K did catalogue it as 32 and 32short. Nobody I talked to has any idear on how many are floating around.

when you say "buy a CKC", do you mean an SKS? I've looked around and can't find a picture of a CKC....except what may have been an SKS

Can't find pictures of CKCs? They are all over the place. Just read TFL--it's the best (or worst) weapon ever invented.

Da, ochen horasho, tovarish. The Cyrillic "S" is printed and written as "C."

Could be worse. I could refer to it by the Chinese "Type."
