The biggest downside to me about the SL-8 is the magazine, other than that, it is not a bad rifle. I got some trigger time in with a G 36 a couple of weeks ago, boy is it nice. The carry handle has a red dot and what looked like a 3 or 4x scope with a range finding capability. Both sight systems worked without difficulty, and the built in bipod was a help. Not too heavy, easy to control in full auto. Too bad I cannot buy one, but keep my fingers crossed I will get issued one sometime.
All of the SL's I have seen have been grey stocked, and it seems a tad bit heavier than the 36. A big plus for the rifles is the rail. The SL also has a heavy barrel.
Tactical Shooter did an article about the SL several months ago, probably the best detail on that rifle in the press.

I have seen pictures of only grey ones from the factory, but one of the guys on the HKPRO listserve has done his in black with a process he is working on. Several guys have added G36 accessories to theirs (handles, scope mounts, etc). I know you said no web sights, but HKPRO is the most definitive online source for HK info I've found.

I don't want the SL-8 because I'm saving my pennies for a 91 & 93 :}

Dude, don't feel alone, I like the SL8 too and if my insurance company comes through with the proper amount for my B&E settlement, I might just have to get one.
It doesn't matter to me that I'll have to shift my grip to get at the safety.

Any idea what the magazines cost?

Now my buddy that likes the UMC he's twisted.

The SL8 is a good idea but delivered in a questionable package. Federal law though has dictated much of this package, especially the unfortunate thumbhole stock.

The rifle is awkward to handle and too heavy for its caliber. The aperature sights that come with it do little to engender shooter confidence. With mine, I could, after some practice, keep a two to three inch group at 100 yards from the bench, but this accuracy was about far as it can go without a scope. To add a scope though only makes the rifle more difficult to handle since it adds considerable height and bulk to the package.

The trigger is a mushy 5# and unadjustable. While the safety release is ambidextrous, it is not easy to reach. The stock is too short for me and a few spacers do not help. I am tremendously underwhelmed with the SL8.

As for the magazine question, yes, I can understand anyone's frustration with the 10 round limit. At $50 a pop, the magazines are exotic and overpriced.

I have been told by one authorized HK dealer that he thinks HK is going to quit the U.S. market soon. Between onerous gun laws and stiff competition from Sig and Glock, HK may well leave. This move would indicate that if you have a HK firearm now, buy a second one of the same type for parts.

As for my SL8, it is on sale for $1450, including four extra magazines and a soft case. Contact me by e-mail, and I will tell who has it on consignment, if you are interested.

Finally, the best thing about the SL8 is the AR-180 type action. This mechanism keeps the chamber easy to clean. If you want this feature, wait until the revamped American AR-180 appears in the near future. Your money will be better spent. The rifle will have no thumbhole stock, and it will probably accept AR-15 magazines.

The 3X scope/handle from HK (scope made by Zeiss) fits the SL8 perfectly and make it a much friendlier package than the ugly factory long sight rail.
