The SL8 is a good idea but delivered in a questionable package. Federal law though has dictated much of this package, especially the unfortunate thumbhole stock.
The rifle is awkward to handle and too heavy for its caliber. The aperature sights that come with it do little to engender shooter confidence. With mine, I could, after some practice, keep a two to three inch group at 100 yards from the bench, but this accuracy was about far as it can go without a scope. To add a scope though only makes the rifle more difficult to handle since it adds considerable height and bulk to the package.
The trigger is a mushy 5# and unadjustable. While the safety release is ambidextrous, it is not easy to reach. The stock is too short for me and a few spacers do not help. I am tremendously underwhelmed with the SL8.
As for the magazine question, yes, I can understand anyone's frustration with the 10 round limit. At $50 a pop, the magazines are exotic and overpriced.
I have been told by one authorized HK dealer that he thinks HK is going to quit the U.S. market soon. Between onerous gun laws and stiff competition from Sig and Glock, HK may well leave. This move would indicate that if you have a HK firearm now, buy a second one of the same type for parts.
As for my SL8, it is on sale for $1450, including four extra magazines and a soft case. Contact me by e-mail, and I will tell who has it on consignment, if you are interested.
Finally, the best thing about the SL8 is the AR-180 type action. This mechanism keeps the chamber easy to clean. If you want this feature, wait until the revamped American AR-180 appears in the near future. Your money will be better spent. The rifle will have no thumbhole stock, and it will probably accept AR-15 magazines.
