Does anyone know about the .308 M-4 type rifle? More specifically is the .308 conversion that you can get for the Bushmaster XM-15 worth getting. Is it a smooth transition or are there side effects? Does the weapon still maintain its functionality or is it prone to manfuntion? I also hear there are companies that manufacture the .308 M-4 style so a conversion is not needed. any insight on this would be appreciated.

There is no such variant of the M-4......Bushmaster does not make what is known as a the AR10 or SR-25. These are completely different lowers with a .308 upper. They are made my Armalite or Knight's Armament.

i know i have never heard of such a conversion or .308 rifle offered by bushmaster. if so, i would pour all over it like maple syrup. i think bushmaster puts out a hell of a good product. they are quality parts. and no, i am not a bushmaster employee, i just play one on TV.

the mag well on a 5.56 AR 15 is not long enough for a .308 NATO round

The M4 is a current issue select fire AR15.
That nominclature does not apply to civilian purchases

The closest non LEO/Mil get is an M4gery
(a faux M4 with 16 inch barrel)

As Karsten said, the Armalite AR10 & the Knights SR25 are the 2 main .308 Stoner designed rifles

ASA has one now:

I think I'm going to go home tonight and call bushmaster. It's been long enough. I know I've heard of this conversion. I thought Bushmaster did it but I think now I am wrong. But they are out there, right? And if so, are they recommendable?

There is no conversion kit...it is a totlally different lower and upper. The mags for the M14/M1A and AR-10 are 1/2" longer and a 1/4" thicker than the AR-15 mags.....Hence they WONT fit.
I own 3 and soon 4 AR-15 and a SA M1A and I have mags for both. I have also done extencive reading on the AR-10's as well.

They are a different rifle all together. They may look the same but they aren't.

As for bushmaster offering anything in .308.....they don't. Check their catalog at www.bushmaster.com
