Is something going on?

I'm just wondering if there is something going on....

It seems that used Uberti percussion revolvers seem to be going for near new pricing.

Is there some odd reason for that other than they seem to be out of some models temporarily? I'm not going to pay within $20 of a new gun for a used one, as I don't "need" anything that bad, but I guess some people either do, or just have to have it when they want it, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. ;)

I've never had a complaint out of my Piettas...but they don't make certain models.

I've found the same thing.
I have also been aggravated at the prices on gunbroker lately. Can't seem to find much of any values. Guys selling brass pieces of junk at high prices. I don't have to buy them, of course, but it seems the prices have gotten out of line. I guess the economy is hurting everywhere these days, but really come on!

Try buying the Uberti model of your choice... they are backordered on most of the interesting versions. So if you want what you want, you pay what you pay. I wanted a Remmie in antique finish to match another as a pair, Taylors said "sometime this year", none in stock anyplace... one on GB "used" at the normal retail price was a good deal as far as I was concerned. Their supply does not meet the demand.

well the lack of certain models MAY be the reason however, the prices will stay that high on used guns because some people have a fetish for that brand/manufacturer and would rather pay brand new prices for used and abused guns instead of buying a brand new pietta for less.

I think that began happening....

...when cabela's stopped the deep discounts on the Traditions revolvers.

When they had their steel 1860s and 1858s of sale for right at 180.00 it was relatively easy to decide to spend your pennies at Cabela's.

Now that the prices of those revolvers are back up to pre-bargain basement days, the Uberti's new at Taylor's are more enticing. This means that the price on used stuff goes up too.

I think you're overstating one half of the issue, and understating the other. "Used" often does not mean "Abused". It's pretty unlikely that purchasers of premium quality modern Uberti replicas imported by Cimarrron or Taylors are abusing them. They are a costly investment, and are not generally the first choice of the casual impulse buyer of these things. Used gun prices in this niche reflect the conditions of the guns, just like any other niche of firearms. There are many "Unfired in the box" Uberti replicas out there, because many people like to buy one, examine it and study it, and then never shoot it for any of a number of reasons. I am happy buying these for "nearly new gun prices" or even "at new gun prices" because thay ARE new guns... and if available when the same model is not available from the importers is likely my only choice if I want it "this season" never mind "to shoot this weekend". I'm a shooter... really, I could care less if a gun in this category is unfired or has been gently fired. if it was not fired when I get it, it'll be fired by next Monday!

As for the Pietta comment... Uberti's are not Piettas. You can hold whatever opinion you like on them, they are differerent manufacturers with different products. They may look similar, but they are different. Enough people think the Uberti's are better to make them more expensive, far rarer in stores, and generally more desirable. The free market has set this, not one mans opinion. If you like the Piettas, more power to you: You can satisfy your pistol-itch in an easier and more affordable way than those who want Uberti products. Enjoy your hobby! For those who want Uberti products, especially ones that are low production items, the secondary market (likely a better description than "used") is a viable alternative. Just as an aside.. you can buy a Timex that looks like a Rolex for less than a used Rolex too... That does not make it a Rolex...

Yep, Willi.
Ubertis are so much better than Piettas that I sold my Ubertis that had been smithed so that I could have the money to replace them with the superior out of the box Piettas.

All of my 1860s are Piettas. If you have any you feel are inferior, I will take them off of your hands. At greatly reduced prices of course.

No need to toss stones or be rude.. As I said, "enjoy your hobby". There's plenty of room for a lot of smiles for a lot of different reasons.

I just write what I see is the general opinion of the marketplace. No problem with Piettas, lots of folks love them. Ditto with Ubertis. Some folks don't care what they buy. Lots of choices for lots of people. If the Uberti's command a premium, it's not because you or I make it happen... it's the general feeling of the marketplace.

I'd send all of my Piettas to you for free if I had any (I do not), but the BBL markings ruin them for me completely. If they re-thought this I might be a buyer.. but I am not. Like I said, it's the forces of the marketplace at work. Piettas are not selling used for a premium. Ubertis are. That's just a fact, not an opinion. The "why" is an opinion, and my opinion is that "generally" people think (rightly or wrongly) that they are a better quality product. You (wrightly or wrongly) think otherwise and have spent your $'s accordingly. That's the beauty of the free market, we have choices. Enjoy yours! I enjoy mine.

The original poster asked about Uberti's. Talking about Piettas is not germane to the mans question in any event. Ford v/s GM... when the question was about Ford.

Uberti only in this thread please. I someone believes one brand is superior to another, I invite them to start a new thread. Our rules of civility still apply. Remember, an armed society is a polite society.

The new case hardened 1858 rem ubertis are expensive but good. they hold conversion cylinders well. I have always had better luck selling ubertis than Piettas for a lot of reasons that are too numerous. For one-the wedge is never too tight. The nipples are not frozen and the screws turn easy. They can be bought thru Taylor &Co that stands behind them 100+
