Is Remington UMC .223 55gr any good?

Just cleaned out a Wal Mart of their last six boxes of this stuff. Priced at $4/box of 20.

Is it any good? How does it compare with Winchester Q3131A?

Odd thing is that, on each round, there is uniform discoloration in the brass at the neck, like it's been subject to some type of heat treatment. In this discolored area, there are dull blotchy areas of even greater discoloration and slight surface roughness, almost like a rust bloom (on brass?). What's up with this? I've never seen this before.

AFAIK, this is newly manufactured ammo; there is nothing on the boxes to suggest otherwise. And the boxes all appeared to have their original factory seals (blips of glue on the fold tabs).

The discoloration is indicative of ammo produced on rapid machinery where there is no time to polish the annealed area. Commercial ammo is produced in batches and this annealing is done in batches. Not so in the rapid process.

As far as it being good stuff, its a bit better than the American Eagle stuff but is still loaded to .223 Rem. SAAMI levels, not M193 stuff like Q3131/Q3131a. As such, its fine to run through a Kimber or other tight throated commercial rifle.

My humdinger FN barrel likes it. This was my test ammo and the first 5 shot group went under 1" @ 100 yards.

Sounds like a good buy.

I like it over all, it was the frist tipe of ammo that i used in my Colt Match Target HBAR. For the last two month i have been useing PMP in my AR, but i have just use it all up, so i'am back to buying UMC.

I really like the UMC 55grn. Cycles smoothly as I empty magazines at an unreasonable rate. And the boxes look so friendly and inviting...:)

strange, it's the only ammo that's ever caused problems in my ar. kept hanging up on the feedramp with the bullet being set WAAAYY back in the case, like there was no crimp at all. and, this wasn't during a break in period or anything. switched ammo, problem corrected itself.
