Is Polygonal Rifling Recommended?

Polygonal rifling? This will be used on a 6.5 Grendel 26" SS bull barrel, long range bolt action bench rifle.

The bigger question is whether it's even available. It won't be a major influence on the overall accuracy, because it will only affect the bullet sealing in the bore and helping it absorb an incremental amount of additional force.

All the other conditions of optimal chamber dimension, rifling twist, and barrel length are entirely separate. The level of fabrication inaccuracy is also highly important, variations in bore diameter will ruin any barrel's accuracy regardless of what type rifling is used.

Shooting cheap import ammo won't help. It only will achieve the best accuracy with premium ammo, and handloads would make more difference than poly rifling.

No one feature will make the rifle a top tier gun, but not executing the important features properly will sure keep it from being in contention.

Most bench rest shooters prefer conventional rifling.

I googled some plugs for Schneider 5P rifling among target shooters.
I don't know how polygonal that really is versus 5R or "canted" rifling.

Lothar Walther makes a polygon bore barrel but have stated that it is not quite as accurate as land and groove although longer lasting.

A local master armorer and rifle maker that builds for long range bench competion and is the offical armorer for the LA County Sheriffs Dept and LAPD including Tactical Squads. Uses PacNor blanks and polygonal rifiling on all of his builds. He states that that it helps stabilize the bullet bette and reduce the barrel wear. Is 5R not polygonal?

Never used polygonal rifling here what it looks like

I know some LR shooter like the Schneider 5P and won but don't see a big rush having them put on. One problem is very few suppliers and none of the main stream are building them you see more building the 5r's.

Right now lot of good barrels being made and I'm a barrel junkie got rifles in the safe with Broughton 5c,Bartlein 5r,Rock Creek 5r,Shilen ratchet twist,Kreiger 5r plus non 5r from Kreiger,Shilen plus McMillan,Hart,Lilja,K&P,Lawton,Chanlynn had Obermeyer 5r on 6.5 and Gaillard on 308.

I've been very lucky over the years having good gunsmiths. As to which barrel is best mine are all pretty good shooters. I do like the 5r/5c and I really like Lilja 3 groove barrels.

I think the important thing is finding a gunsmith you like and he show some interest in what your building. Hard for me to comment on things have shot if you like the gunsmith and he going to stand behind what he build why not try it. Well good luck

Thanks Old Roper! Just kicking the idea around... I will probably stay with the 5R as my last 2 builds use this rifiling and they are both dead on target. :D
