I was out plinking with my 10/22 last night and I was thinking about putting a colapsable stock on it and maybe a flash hider for the heck of it. How can I tell if my rifle is preban. My parents bought it for me in either 93 or 94. I just can't remember. Can I use the serial number somewhere. Thanks, Larz

I don't know that there's any such thing as a pre-ban 10/22.

The "assault weapons" (sic) thing states that IF the gun is a semi-auto AND accepts a detachable magazine THEN it may also have any two of the following features:
-Pistol grip
-Collapsing or folding stock
-Flash hider
-Bayonet lug

If I'm correct, you can put a flash hider and collapsing stock on it (as long as the stock doesn't have a PG) and still be (ahem) legal.

Free advice, and worth every penny. ;)

I really don't think you can put the collapsable stock and the flash hidder on at the same time. Because.... the detachable magazine is a "deadly feature" So that would make 3. In fact... I believe the collapsable stock is one feature. The pistol grip on the stock is another feature. The detachable magazine is a feature. And the flash hidder makes a 4th. Can anyone straighten us out... Larz

If it were true that you could have 2 features beyond your detachable mag. They that would mean I could put a flash hidder on my postban Ar15 and it would be legal. Only counting the pistol grip and the flash hidder. I am really confused now.. Help

I think magazines over 10 rounds may be the only exception for .22 cal. It's ok to manufacture and sell to civvies new .22 mags over 10 rounds as long as they are tubular, non-detachable, and can only work for .22.

First, the legal answer:

Your detachable magazine rifle (rimfire/centerfire doesn't matter) can have one additional "bad feature" from this list:

- pistol grip
- folding/collapsable stock
- threaded barrel/flash suppressor/sound suppressor (NFA)
- grenade launcher
- bayonet lug

If you had a rifle that had 2 or more of these features on or before Sept 13, 1994, it is a grandfathered "pre-ban" AW. Rifles that were NOT in AW configuration on or before this date are NOT grandfathered AWs, no matter when they were made.

Now, reality:

If your rifle was made before Sept 13, 1994, *and you can prove it*, you can generally get away with adding pre-ban features to it.
