is it worth the extra buck?

I want to get a light revolver for carry. I was looking at the S&W 642 (for $399) and i like that its hammerless and its very light, but there is the 340(for $649)....is the extra-lightness worth spending on it? its super light and hamerless too, i would carry 38+p in it. so its not that it can have a more powerful load, but is it practical for me? im more leaning toward the 642!

Go with the 642... it's the #1 choice (as far as I can tell) in pocket revolvers. And it's bordering on too light as it is, so no need to go any lighter in my view. My 642 is my "no-reason-not-to-ALWAYS-have-a-gun-with-you" gun. Not a lot of fun to shoot, that's for sure! But easy to take along and comforting to have with you. For actually SHOOTING, I'll take bigger and heavier guns anyday! ;-)=

STOP

My friend $399 is way toooooooo much for a NIB S&W 642!

I sell 'em NIB everyday for only $339.88 (+ 9% sales tax for locals only).

Shop around, it pays dividens! :D

Best Wishes,

I traded my 642 for a 340PD and for me it was a very good choice:

The small decrease in weight from steel cylinder to titanium cylinder is not noticable in either ease of carry, or recoil.

It's nice to know that any .38 load I use in the gun is still 'way below what it can take.

The 340 PD gives me a black gun (I don't like shiny guns) that is virtually rustproof because of the alum frame, titanium cylincer, and stainless/alum barrel & shroud.

I do most of my practice with light .38 loads, shoot the CorBon 125 gr +P (actually, I think it's really a +P+ load) 4 times a year for departmental qualification. Works for me.

I have been seeing alot of questions on the 340PD lately on here. It all depends on your buying philosophy. Thats why they make so many different models of guns, cd players, cameras, etc etc. Yes the 642 is a bargain, and most certainly will do the job but, I personally buy the best available for items that will last a long time.

I bought the 340PD because it will :

-last forever, i will have this gun for the rest of my life probably
-will save my life
-the lighest concealed carry you can buy,i wanted the lightest most concealable gun there is, that still fits my hand
-i'm not using this gun for target practice for fun, im using it to save my life
-its very versatile as far as the different loads you can use
-crimson trace makes laser grips for it(which i gladly bought)..the hi-viz sights dont work in the dark, nice sight, just kinda misleading.
-the lighter the gun, the more likely you wont have any excuses not to bring it

sorry if anyone has seen this pic before, i am just showing off my new baby like a proud father ;)

The CT grips really complement the futuristic look of your revo (oxymoron, I know). This is probably the first example of a "tactical" revolver I've seen. :)

50% for 340s' & 50% for 642!!??

well, its 50-50 on choice, for price, one says too much for the 642, one says not worth the $75/oz. more, and im not going to use this for plinkin, just carry. either model i choose, i will use the same load, and i have went to 3 differant places for price on the 642- at $399. where do you sell at Ala Dan? im in south western PA. what other model or brands would be light and as small as the 642? any size cal that is comparable to a .38
