Is it safe to shoot slugs in rem chokes?

Sure.
Keep the choke in place.
Otherwise the threads could get damaged.
Modified seems to be the most accurate choke with slugs in mine.

The cautions about screw-in chokes, especially the early ones, are related to the use of steel shot. Typically, slugs are soft lead or have a soft plastic sabot -- so, no worries. As g.willikers noted, experiment to find out which choke/slug combination will be the most accurate in your barrel.

I dont have an 870, but my Mossberg 500 has removable chokes, and it was recommended in the manual to use the modified choke for foster slugs. Tried it and it shoots just fine.

Just get used to checking that it remains FINGER tight when the gun is empty by sticking your finger in and give 'er a twist.
