Is it safe to "Fluff and Buff" a hard chrome P32?

Okay guys, now that I’ve got my P32 I’ve got a good question about “fluffing and buffing” it.

I did a “La France” trigger job on a buddy’s P-11. It was pretty easy to do with a Dremel tool and some Jeweler’s Rouge. The thing is, his P-11 was blued and my P32 has the factory hard chrome finish.

I was looking at Golden Loki’s pages on how to “fluff and buff” a P32 with really fine grit wet-or-dry sandpaper. His instructions are pretty extensive, and involve a whole lot of sanding on most of the surface area and contact points, along with some pretty delicate parts. I wouldn’t hesitate to try this if my gun were blued, but I don’t want to do this if it will destroy the hard chrome finish. I bought the hard chrome version primarily because of the rust resistance, and all that sanding is liable to wreck it.

Will the sanding destroy the hard chrome finish, or is there a way to do it without hurting the finish? Can the same results be achieved with a Dremel tool and Jeweler’s Rouge?

Thanks a lot in advance for any and all help!

I've done the F&B on my blued model, and I just want to say that in this particular case, I think that the Dremel is a bad idea. The steps for the F&B detail that you fold the fine sandpaper (400 or 600) to just the right sixe to polish the part you're working on...not all the others around it. I think that is where you'll get into trouble with a Dremel and rouge. I really don't think that it'll cause a problem at all. All you're doing is smoothing the microscopic bumps in the finish that slow the action down. Did the trigger job you did apply to P-32's as well? How's it done?

The one I did on the P11 is outlined on the KTOG website. I've never worked with the P32 before.

Made the mistake of posting this on Friday evening. Hopefully all of you "mousegunners" will see it this time.

Thanks!

All you're doing with a "fluff & buff" is speeding the breakin process and, hopefully, reducing wear.

In either case -- blued or hard chrome (or any other finish, for that matter) -- you're removing some finish. But it would end up getting removed anyway -- through normal attrition from metal against metal.

Use the Dremel on the feed ramp and perhaps on the side of the frame, but avoid doing anything to any of the aluminum frame parts. They have an anodized surface and any form of buffing or sanding will remove the wear-resistant anodized surface.

Fluffing and buffing, rather than harming the gun or finish surface, could arguably improve weapon life...
