Is it possible to put different sights on my Mossberg 590 Mariner?

I have had this Mossberg 590 Mariner since I bought it new in 1995 or so. I have not fired it since I moved to Florida in 1997!!

Anyway, I have never liked the sights on it. Er, well, the sight on it -- all it has is a little brass ball-thingie on the bore end. There is nothing at the action end.

I would prefer to have some sort of combat sights on the shotgun. Would adding them be a major job, or is it something that a kit could be ordered for and a local gunsmith could do easily and for low cost?

If I had looked harder, would I have found a 590 Mariner with a different stock sight setup?

I'm imagining the kind that other "combat" model shotguns have -- something of a post on the front, and the kind of rear sight that has those two vertical protective "wings" alongside the rear notch. My 590 Mariner did not come with anything on the rear. I want to know if something can be added, which would be effective but inexpensive, and done with a minimal amount of gunsmithing required. Mostly for the rear, but I guess I might also have to or want to replace the little brass ball front post.

Frankly, I'm surprised that a shotgun designed for marine environment (unless I'm mistaken about that) would have less-than-combat-ready sights on it. Or is the thinking, "point-and-shoot, yer on a boat for cryin' out loud"?

GhostRing Sights for Mossberg

I believe you are wanting ghost rings. I have a 590a1 with ghost rings on it, and I really like them. Mossberg currently sells the sights, and recommends a gunsmith installation. I think they sell them for around $70, but there is a set on ebay right now (MOSSBERG GHOST RING SIGHT KIT Models 500, 590, 835 NEW Item number: 7180447649) for $20. The next best thing I know of would be the ATI heatshield with built in ghost rings. (http://www.combatstocks.com/ATI_Heatshield_with_Ghost_Ring_Sights(_SHOTFORCE_SYSTEM).cfm) This is a polymer heat shield with built in sights, and I have owned several ATI products and all hav been very good in quality. I hope that helps.

I know the Mossberg factory sights are nice, they take a little getting used to, but they work great. I even shoot skeets with mine occasionally!

I have that heat shield installed on my 870, it works OK and it looks pretty
cool :D , but it did require some minor time consuming alteration to my foregrip to get it on properly, if you have this problem simply install the shield and attempt to rack the slide. the shield will leave marks on the grip where it needs to be cut (a dremel tool works great for this). This way there will be no noticeable damage to the grip.
