GUNNUTS

HEY GUYS:GUNNUTS HERE,I live in Pa. Is it legal to go Md. to BASS PRO SHOPS and buy a shotgun,I don't know Md. gun laws.THANKS ALOT PS:do they have a waiting period,or insta check like here in Pa.

Md's gun laws are Draconian, and I've no idea of you can do this.

We went to the Bass Pro Shop Outdoor World last weekend, and got a personal tour from the manager. We had hunted together the previous week. Nice place, nice guy.

I noted the prices didn't look all that good on shotguns. Didn't look at every one tho...

I don't know if you have a Sports Authority up there but they have the best prices by far on shotguns down here in FLA. Bass Pro is not even as competitive as Walmart, although the do have EVERYTHING--it's the place to go if you're looking for something off the wall. I know U.S. law allows you to buy a long gun in MD, it's only the local laws that could be the problem.

The SA in G'ville doesn't seem to have the selection it did a few months back. Didn't I read somewhere that SA was discountinuing all gun sales? Or did I just catch that store in bad stock time, (after Christmas).

My understanding of federal law is that it is legal to go to another state and purchase a long gun from an FFL such as a gun shop or chain store.

*IF* the gun being purchased is to replace one that was damaged, stolen, lost, etc while taking part in some lawful activity in that state. Of course local laws may vary.

Thanks. Now I'm even more confused. Instead of requiring background checks to purchase guns, we really need law degrees.

Amen to that Monkeyleg.

FWIW having an electronic copy of the codes in MS Word has helped a lot in finding the speciffic topic one is looking for.

After reading that link I'd have to say that it looks legal to buy a shotgun or rifle that way. Any question and it is always best to check first, if you can't afford to ask a lawyer for something like this the state police can often help (though they may tell you something more restrictive). I don't know if MD law is stricter on this. Maryland State Police may be able to help (at any rate the site is interesting- some scary laws here). I couldn't find any info about someone out of state buying long guns here but there is a phone number and email at the bottom of the site you can use to ask.

do they have a waiting period,or insta check like here in Pa

For handguns we use both the federal insta check system and a 7 day waiting period (which through the state police often being slow can be drawn out to 3 weeks or more sometimes, some dealers will give you your gun after the 7 day legal wait even if they aren't done others won't). I'd love to see some stats on the number of people found in the longer state check that get through the federal check, probably only a waste of money and time (at a time that the state budget is in trouble) to simply harass law abiding citizens.

For rifles and shotguns you only need to go through the insta check. Waiting period for a handgun (the insta check isn't good enough) but only an insta check for a long gun, makes sense right? :barf:

A rifle or shotgun can kill you just as dead as a handgun. Given that and with the federal check done anyway, I don't get the handgun waiting period but I'm just your average college educated (working on some post bachelors stuff and soon to be graduate student) American, what do I know?! Anyway, I digress.

Not that this will help you, but I believe in FL, I can go to a state that borders on Florida, such as Georgia to buy a long gun. A hand gun can only be bought in state. I would check with your local Attorney General, or State police. If all else fails, and you want to purchase a gun out of state, do so and have it sent to a FFL in your state and they can do all the paperwork there. Most dealers will charge you a service fee $10-$50 for the service, but some may not depending on how friendly you are with them. Lots of people do this, especially when prices are so competitive on the internet.

Under federal law, you can purchase a long gun in a state other than your state of residence, provided that 1) you purchase it from an FFL and 2) that you obey the laws of both states (i.e., the laws of your state of residence and the laws of state the FFL is in).

I can't comment on the state laws of MD, as I'm completely unfamiliar with them. But it's my understanding that MD is one of the more draconian states, so I wouldn't be surprised if there are issues with the MD state laws.

me thinks in most cases, ajoining states allow long arm sales

i buy my rifles in PA & i'm a Maryland resident

does Bass Pro shop have a better price than a local PA shop?

it would be a shorter trip to either the Harrisburgh gunshows or
