Is it legal?

I just recently aquired a Stevens model 311 series H SxS shotgun 18 1/8 inch barrel.....Stamp on the side reciever (serial # I guess) is D324xxx. Can anyone tell me what I have? I think it might be sawed off but not sure.

18 inches is legal requirement, so your set. Your allowed to saw down a barrel on your own a slong as its a legal length.

well if it were 100% pro clipped, it would be hard to tell. If you examine the muzzle/crown, you may see some signs of a well done job or even evidence of a booger/bubbasmith job. Any grinder marks on the crown are a sure sign of clipped. If it has no bead screwed into the barrel or threaded hole... also sign of clipped. measure the muzzle inside diameter... if it is smaller than .729, it is choked and is sign of a factory barrel but most 18-20 inch barrels were cylinder bore (.729) for maximum pattern size closer in for defensive use...
Hope this is of help!

I doubt it's original considering quick google search pulled up gunbroker on which I only saw 30" barrels or around there.

Is It Legal

ThankYou All....Brent, The absence of a bead leads me to believe it is sawed off...but still not sure...appreciate the suggestion of measuring bore. Surprised I cant find info on this shotgun anywhere.

Yes, Lack of at least a hole is usually a sign of a clipped barrel. Short of a specialized sport gun, most came with at least a bead. Many guys prefer no bead and would un screw it and leave the hole.

Don't be too surprised... lack of info is common with a gob of models due to lack of recent production or interest since the forums took off... I bet there is more in old print on most of these than is found on the Al Gore invention we use today...:D

Awesome responses folks....still wondering if there is a Stevens model 311, series H, serial # D324xxx in an 18 inch barrel

Lot's of em around

The Savage-Stevens 311 is a popular old working mans double. Many were made by Stevens for Sears (JC Higgins) and also for Western Auto (Revelation) plus I'm sure tons of others. I would just about bet there are more out there that are "store branded" than ones sold by Stevens. I have 2 one 12 and one 20. They are good old guns, I like both of mine, they are just good basic shotguns. They generally sell for 200-350 in good shape. AFAIK they were available in 24, 28, and 30" barrels. I'm sure yours is chopped I've never seen one original that is so short. My 12 ga. has 24" and my 20" is 30" barrels. I believe the short barrels are choked IC and MOD and the longer ones are MOD and FULL. The 2 examples I have are choked that way. With no front bead I'm 100% sure yours is chopped, that's a shame someone wrecked a good gun.

Gotta agree with you Ricklin....It is a SHAME....Havn't mentioned the fact that the stock was chopped to a pistol grip....So it appears that I have a sawed off shotgun with a pistol grip....useless to anyone ...It shoots great and will sit by my night stand...GOD HELP the fool who walks into my house uninvited.

OHHHHH!!!!
Now you must measure the OAL...
It MUST be no less than 26 inches overall or it is in need of the Short Barrel Shotgun stamp... Pumps rarely fail to meet this with 18 inch barrel and PGO grip but single shots can be too short overall.

GOD HELP the fool who walks into my house uninvited.
For the above statement, find a replacement standard stock and you will be pleasantly surprised at the increased versatility, accuracy, comfort, etc...

this is my bedside and bedside 20 gauge 500 with 18.5 inch barrel. NO PGO FOR ME!!! I BTDT!

The accurate measurement is to hold the gun against wall with barrel on the wall... Measure from floor to muzzle... Not diagonally from heel to muzzle...;) them federal agent tape measures can be some stingy buggers!

Measure the overall length in a straight line with the barrels.
My 311, measured properly, would be about 25 inches if it were sawn to a "proper" pistol grip.

Was it cut...

With double guns, there are often tell tale signs if the barrels have been cut. Double guns typically have a pair of full length ribs that cover the space between the barrels. They don't fill the space, they just cover it, there's a void between the barrels. At the factory muzzle, they install filler pieces between barrels as they solder the ribs.

If the barrels are cut, the exposed void between the ribs needs to be filled for a proper job. Often this will done with a cold process material like metalic cement (JB Weld). This is done to avoid the effort and potential problems associated with reheating the barrels. Of course, if you don't care the voids may be left exposed. Here's a pic of a factory Stevens muzzle with the fillers freshly dressed. A cut job would probably show the joints between the filler and the original metal.

Slugs are A-OK

It's fine to shoot slugs through a SXS. Is is also possible to shoot both barrels at the same time with the dual triggers on these guns. That's a good way to crack the stock. Or your shoulder/hand:)
