Is it legal?

Can my public library prohibit me from carrying a concealed, permit-legal fire-arm into the library? Said weapon is on my body, not in a back-pack. They mention the prohibition in the same paragraph as banning cell-phones, but the 2d amendment does not cover cell-phines, does it? How about WalMart or Sears??

In the US, it depends on your state. Some states prohibit carry in different places, and some allow for owners to prohibit carry on private property.

Call the sherriff, or if the library is in the city the city police [i.e. call the police department that would be called if someone turned you in] and see what they say. If there's no law against it and they don't care, you have nothing to worry about. In that event, if it's concealed noone will know anyways.
I always call the sherriff's office when I'm in doubt. It's just a safe bet to keep yourself out of needless trouble with the law.

As for the original question.... as stated before depends on your state laws. in S.C. you can't.. unless you work for the government.

To answer the question of the OP, if the library is a county, city or township library, there may be a local law or statute on the books backing-up that sign. I would check into it with whatever government entity keeps ordnance and statute records. The local cops may not know about the prohibition or any law that backs it up.

I just dropped in to see what someone thought was legal....

All righty then!

Some of you will find your posts removed. Some will find your posts edited (I left my calling card :D ). All of you that are involved, know what I'm talking about. Don't like it? PM me, don't post about it.

Depends on your location

And if your library is public or private property. In some locations the law allows private property owners to refuse concealed carry.

Standard advice is to check with your local law enforcement authorities, but be advised, they may not know the correct interpretation of the law. They should (and ususally do), but they may not. For accurate legal advice, go to a lawyer. That way, if you get the wrong info, you can blame them in court.

The liberals in Ferndale, Michigan tried this trick and a local gun-rights organization promptly spanked them in court.
