Is it legal for me to put "assault weapon" accessories on my post-ban AR-15?

I have a Colt Match Target HBAR, a "post-ban" rifle that has no bayonet lug or flash suppressor.

Now that the ban is expired, is it legal for me to add a bayonet lug and/or flash suppressor?

I would like the former at least, and possibly the latter.

I'd appreciate any definitive information about whether this would be an illegal modification. Hopefully, I don't have to go and buy a whole new post-post-ban rifle in order to have these things on it.

Also, is adding a bayonet lug easy or intricate? I don't want to have to get machining done, and I prefer a minimum amount of gunsmithing if possible. I figure that adding the flash suppressor would be the more complex of the two tasks, and so will leave it for later.

Depends on state law; the federal ban is now gone (so it would be ok under federal law), but some states like NJ and NY have similar state statutes that are still in effect.

Putting a bayo lug on is not exactly an easy deal - you need to remove the gas tube from the front sight tower and then remove the front sight tower from the barrel and replace it with a new one (that has a bayo lug on the bottom). They're not exactly easy to knock off, and the new one has to be indexed to the gas port in the barrel. Depending on your ability it can be done, but its an operation I wouldn't mess with just to get a bayo lug. Threading the barrel? I'd recommend you just take it to a decent smith in your area and have it done; probably cost about $75.

Right. In the eyes of the Federal law, whether or not the gun was pre-ban or post-ban is no long a legal issue as the ban no longer exists and the restrictions of the ban are not grandfathered. "Post-ban" guns are not forever doomed to the ban restrictions.

As noted, there may be state issues.

I assume it would be the same for post ban AK's as in putting a folding stock on a post ban or for that matter even, pre ban AK?

boy havent seen a thread regarding this in nearly a year...

but, as others have said...

there is no such thing as a pre-ban or post-ban rifle. the ban has expired and it no longer applies. unless you live in one of the occupied territories ruled by communist/socialist/nazi/dictatorship/type government...

the only thing federal you want to pay attention to is making sure that the rifle is at least 26" long folded with a barrel at least 16" long, lest your run afoul the short barreled rifle clause of the BATfeMEN's rules...

As far as AK's go, I belive it is illeagle to alter it to a state where it would be banned from importation.

Folding stock AK's are banned from importation under the first president bush.

That is my understanding, but I am happy to be corrected if I am wrong.

I am not a lawyer, I only play one on the internet. :D

My local pawnshop has at least two WARS 10 AK's with functional folding stocks. In addition Military Gun Supply has AK's with folding stocks. These may be subject to the U.S. made parts rule.

The assault weapons ban is dead.

Dead.

Finito.

Stop worrying about it.
Incorrect.

Some states, like CA, NJ, and MA, still have AWB laws on the books. If you live in such a state, there is plenty to worry about. Like jail.

Seperate from the AWB, was 922r, which regulates what features maybe on imported rifles. This is also known as the "maximum of 10 "evil" foreign parts".

You still need to ensure you have changed enough foriegn parts to comply.
