Is it a new P7M8?

I have been looking to purchase a new HK P7M8. The best price I have found at gun stores is $1,250. However, I have met a private dealer (who seems trustworthy) who is selling a NIB P7M8 for $950. While he says it has never been fired and is not a refurb, I am concerned about why his price is so low (I have seen refurbs advertised for $750). My questions are:

1. How can I tell whether the gun is actually new?

2. I have learned from the HK-Pro web-site how to tell when the gun was manufactured, but I do not know if there are any years which I should avoid (i.e., have there been updates to the gun or is there some "expiration" date issue I should be concerned with for a new gun which has not been fired for a number of years)?

3. Would I just be better off paying an extra $325 and purchasing the gun from my local gun store?

I am new to the world of guns and would appreciate any help which you could give me. I have found this site to be the most informative location on or off the internet.

Newly manufactured guns have been unavailable until now. These are available with warranty for about $1049 plus shipping. Now, H&K offers a lifetime warranty to the original purchaser. If that would be you, then it sounds like a good deal.

I think the $950 is a good price. If it is NIB that will be readily apparent to you when you inspect it. In my state (HI) prices are usually quite high but I have seen NIB P7 w/ nite sites for $1050 and refurbs as low as $599.

I would pick mine up from the private dealer. The warranty should still be in force, and P7 are very sturdy anyhow.

BTW The P7M8 is an excellent choice. My refurb has been hard chromed and fitted with Meprolight Sights, and now lives in my night stand.

$950 is a good price. I just bought one for $1050; it has an AA proof date.

What is the proof date?

Does it have the warranty card? the case? the manual? two magazines? the cylinder cleaning tool? the cylinder cleaning brush? If any of these items are missing, it would make wonder whether is it new.

Get the serial number. Call HK. Find out if HK knows whether it was sold to someone else.

I've been looking at them too, but mostly for a P7M13. The easiest way to tell if the gun is a refurb is to see if there's a mill mark on the slide. A mill mark is an area where the gun formerly had a police marking and was sanded/milled off. It's usually about a quarter of an inch wide, 3/4 of an inch high, and on the right side of the gun just forward of the ejection port on the side of the slide. You'll know it when you see it, and once you see one it'll be the first thing you look for when you pick one up. Also, many of the refurbs have a purplish color to the slides, but not all.

Actually, some recent posts on the hkpro boards have alluded to the fact that the warranty is NOT valid unless one purchases a firearm from an "authorized dealer."

I would triple check on this one, as it could come back to haunt you. I have, however, heard many stories about people sending in broken parts of pistols not under warranty and HK replaces them free of charge. Just some food for thought...

Someone, alluded to the fact that the NIB P7M8's were unavailable until now.

Where can I fond an NIB one? If HK will really warranty it, $1050 sounds fair...
