"Is it a 9mm?"

Quick poll, when your friends ask what kind of pistol you have, do they say, "Is it a 9mm?" and do you find this annoying at all?

My friends ask "What did you get this time?". The only folks that have asked "Is it a 9mm?" have been folks that have never held a gun in their hands more than a few times. It doesn't bother me, and sometimes the answer is "Yes it is."

Friends, no. Co-workers, yes. Annoying, kinda, but I get to say [huff]"I carry a .45"[/huff] :)

Some of them are gun owners, but not in the way that TFLers are Gun Owners.

I have always approached such questions as an opportunity to share a little of the knowledge I've picked up along the way.

There was once a time in our lives when each and every one of us would likely have asked that same question, after all.

No, I've never been faced w/ that response. (Lucky?) I have had someone roll her eyes at me when she found out that not only am I a gun owner, but I truly enjoy shooting them

No. Those who ask me that question are not my friends, just mere acquaintances at the range. I do get a little annoyed, but I get some bit of comfort (sweet revenge:D ) after they see all the Alpha's (and fast times) i easily score during our mock IPSC practice sessions. I don't lose sleep over it:p :D

My friends, now they KNOW better! :D

"Is that a 9mm?"

[My response, usually:]

"No. It's a 10mm ..."

[Then follows a puzzled look, with their eyes asking ... "WTF?"]

" ...'cause I want the BG to stay down."

"Oh, I see." :)

Got that response from a fellow rent-a-cop when he asked what guns I had. Told him that my carry gun would be my 9mm. He did the typical "ohhh, baby 9mm." And this from a guy that carrys a Glock 21.... in town. A little over kill to me. Yes, .45 is a great round (own a Colt myself) and I wouldn't hesitate using it. I just think it's a little much for duty use anywhere besides the open country or where you would be faced by 4 legged goblins, where I'd much rather have a .44 mag. Anyways, as he's saying "baby 9mm", I'm thinking, "yeah, but I can get off 3 or 4 well-placed shots in the time you get off 2."

My point is, don't criticism someone's choice if they're okay with it. You're not the one carrying it, they are.

Why not?

80% of the world's military and law enforcement forces use the 9 mm Parabellum, so my guess is that the questioner is merely playing the percentages.

80% of the worlds military has been whupped at least once. Don't think the choice of sidearms had much to do with it.

I think maybe 9mms are so popular in rap music and TV shows and movies, not to mention that research shows (!!) that bad guys prefer 9mm pistols (I swear I heard this 'study' somewhere).

I guess .38 super is hard to rhyme that's why you don't hear it in rap.

I have been asked that question several times actually. Usually by people who dont know anything about handguns.

As long as the gun they are asking about isnt a 1911, I dont take offense.

I agree with Skunkabilly, with the rapp craze and guns in Hollywood the 9mm is everyones preference.Too bad those of us who shoot don't follow this trend to falsely suggest,is that a 9?When my friends at work and at home realized I carry .40sw they had that WTF is that look, and I clearly told them the difference of caliber size.SAFE-SHOOTING!

Most calibers known by the average person are the 45 caliber or 357 caliber or 38 caliber, but the nine is the only one known by them with a millimeter designation and that makes it seem special somehow.

It's not exactly a silly question. I still remember asking someone if the H&K G-3 they were letting me hold was a, gulp, "sniper rifle."

I look at it as a teaching experience.

Yes, I've had the Hollywood-induced question: "9MM, huh?" Since I have several options I could be carrying, it could be a .22LR, 9MM, .40S&W, .357SIG or .45Auto.

When I respond with: "No, I prefer the .357SIG for this application" - I usually get the deer-in-the-headlights look. Several folks still don't understand that there is a difference between .357MAG and .357SIG.

I have carried a concealed weapon for years and occasionally someone 'discovers' that fact. I'm most annoyed that I've been found out, but fortunately most are people I know and they are simply curious as to what I'm carrying. On the rare occasion that I show the weapon, most ask: "That looks like a Glock". To which I respond: "Well, no, that is a SIG". "That a 9MM?" "No, that's a .45" "Damn! a .45!? Do they still make those? I thought they went out in WWII"

More opportunity for another teaching moment.
