I came across some pretty cheap hollow point ammo and was wondering if Federal 9mm 147 grain Hi-Shok JHP is any good? Thanks.

According to the referenced testing,
http://www.luckygunner.com/labs/self-defense-ammo-ballistic-tests/#9mm

and if "Hi-Shok" is the same or comparable to "Hydra Shok", it penetrates well, but doesn't expand.

If it's the same or comparable to HST, it penetrates and expands well.

The Hi-Shok 9mm ammo wasn't tested by LuckyGunner.com. It's my understanding the Hi-Shok bullet is different from the HST and Hydra Shok projectiles. It's a fairly old design which I don't know how long back or how well it works.

If possible, I'd recommend the HST, based upon other reviews and word-of-mouth.
Here's one source:

With that said, I've actually bought a case of Hi Shok (but in .45ACP) just to have around. However, if possible money-wise, get the latest, greatest HST version, but from where/who's got it is also a question.

With any new ammo version, be sure to test it in your weapon for function prior to actually relying on it.

I believe Hi-Shocks were one of their earliest JHP designs, soon supplanted by the dated but still-serviceable Hydra-Shocks, and finally the HST (which are awesome, but hard to find.).

Honestly, I don't get too wrapped up in the exact bullet. Yes, I stocked up on HSTs when I had the chance, but the number one rule of gun fighting still applies: Have A Gun. If Hi-Shocks are what's available to you, take them and don't look back.

I've used it in my Kimber SOLO because the factory recommends 147 gr HP ammo. The SOLO is well broken in so it shoots anything I put in it, including 115 gr RN ammo.

I hope to never have the occasion to shoot in self defense. However, I use RN ammo in my carry guns now. I wouldn't care to try and convince a jury of the merits of my ammo for self defense..

Gotta love the name "Hi-Shok" as if pistol bullets have any Shock value. We have to remember that what once was "cutting edge" is now regulated to budget ammo. Like Winchester 9mm hollow point white box.
