Is Federal 9bp 115 grain 9mm high shock good enough?

Just wanted to know if this 9mm jacketed hollow point is good enough for personal defense without resorting to +p ammo? Would be used in gun that has a barrel 4 inches or longer. Thanks, Sling Shot

Sling Shot, if you do your part (determination & accuracy), that bullet(s) will do you in good stead, in self defense.

Practice, practice, practice. J.B.

From what I've heard, Hi-Shok is just the Hydra-shok without the post. I'm sure the perp won't be able to tell the difference.

Great stuff. The 9BP and the Silvertip were the first two standard velocity 9MM loads to actually expand reliably. My favorite load for my SIG P225 and P226.

This is my preferred 9mm non+P carry ammo for use in small pistols. They are very accurate and reliable in most pistols. For larger pistols I prefer to use 115gr +P or +P+ usually Remington 115gr +P+ JHP.

Double tap to the chest, one to the head, another to the neck and then finally one or two to the groin. Yep, that round ought to work just fine. And, the guy/gal won't be able to sue you. :D

Hello. Yes, the 9BP is a "good" load in 9mm.
It's frequently very accurate in some 9mms as well. My Taurus PT92 loves it and keeps them all in the X-ring at 15 yards on a 50' target. Best.

The 9BP load is readily available at a very good price, and generally feeds well in most 9's. I've had varying results with it as far as accuracy goes, however. It's rarely mediocre, but in some pistols is not very accurate.

I shoot the same load :) but Hydra-Shok, no differnece to me. I'd use either, you'd be fine with either.

there are loads i'd prefer but 9BP is very good and i would feel well armed with it. good pluses that 9BP has is it's very light recoiling and its cheap enough that you can practice with your defense load a lot. 9BP is good but 9BPLE is great. :-)

Ok, Ok, it is a winner. Now, let me beat on a different drum. I hear different people and gun rags saying all the time, "there are a lot of bad personal defense rounds for the 9mm". What would these bad defensive rounds be? Sling Shot

Depends on how much penetration you want/think you will need to do the job.

In the FBI test series it avgs 11.5 pen, .50 exp, goes 12 or over 35% of the time. The +P+ is the same BTW. The 124/147 HS do 14-17 pen, .50 exp, 82.5%.

M&S have the 124 HS at 81%, the +P+ HS at 88%, the 115 +P+ at 93%.

The 115-124s, std and +P, from Rem, Win, Fed, and Speer are pretty much peas in a pod IMO; the differences don't really make much differnce. Use the most accurate in your gun, the cheapest, or flip a coin.

The "bad" JHP loads for the 9mm are the 147 grain loads.

Simply put they SUCK.

Not enough velocity to reliably open the jacket good enough. In a revolver a bullet this weight/velocity would do well if you used a soft lead hollowpoint, but not here.

Some autopistols have a problem cycling reliably with many 147 grainers because they don't provide enough slide-velocity.

The 9mm should only use 115-124 grain bullets.

Hello. In my view, conventional soft points and 147 gr loads are poor self-defense loads.
I cannot get PMC Starfire (124gr) to group out of several pistols although it does expand. The "old" Remington 115 gr JHP did not expand much at all, but the current versions, especially in Plus P, do. Any of the ball loads are pretty much at the bottom of defensive capability in my opinion. While I really like Hornady 124 gr XTPs driven fast in this caliber, I suspect that their 147 gr XTP is not all that great at typical velocity for that weight in this caliber. Many if not all of the ammo makers have tweaked their products such that they do feed and do expand better than in years past. Thus, it can be that it's getting harder to find "bad" 9mm loads. Best.
