Is anyone familiar with the H&K SL7?

I remember these from the 80's.
It was H&K's sporting rifle in .308 and the .223 was the SL6.

Now that I want one I can't find one, or anyone that has owned one, to talk to.

I also heard they are still selling them in Europe. How would a guy get one here?

I have one. It is the softest recoiling .308 I have ever shot. I shot a 3 shot group with irons at 100 yard that could be covered by a quarter. The irons are the same as the HK-91. It is accurate with milsurplus, premium hunting ammo, Federal GM 168MK, everything. A wonderful, short, accurate carbine. I got it for a great deal used. I then called HK and they sent me an owner's manual (the last one) for free.

Magazines are expensive at $60+ even for the 2 or 3 rounders. (2 rounders were for the German home market.) Factory 10 round mags are also available at $60+. I find 2, 3, and 10 rounders are the same cost. NO OTHER HK MAGS FIT!!!

Get the HK05 scope mount if you can find one. B-Square makes their version, but it is not as nice (but is only $50, compared to HK05 running as high as $395) I got mine used for $190, and picked up assorted parts of the mount at gun shows for 2 years, so I now have a complete second for a total of $90! The HK05 definitely holds a zero when removed and replaced.

Good Luck.

You may be able to get a used one imported privately using an ATF Form 7(?). I do not know if the 1994 ban applies since they never had a flash hider, pistol grip, or highcap, but with this administration, import may be denied. They became too expensive for the US market.

700PPS,
You just confirmed what I suspected.
Accurate and low recoil.

I have a Remington Model 7 in 308 that I consider the perfect deer gun because it handles so well and fits me perfect. If it was only semi-auto!

In stepped the SL7. And guess what my initials are SL!

I saw one a few weeks ago at a gun show and the guy wanted 1200 bucks or so (Gun, mounts, & scope)but I never got a chance to discuss it with him. It had an extremely high scope mount of the quick disconnect type. Do you think that was the H&K mount?

A friend has one. Very accurate and very nice. The trigger is OK, IIRC it's smooth but a bit long.

I have never seen one for sale other than new.

Must be a good rifle.

I got one and gave it to my son back in the early 80's. He had gone into the army and was a tanker, so figured that would be a good weapon for him to keep in his tank if he ever had to go in harms way. Besides, he would not have a problem finding ammo for it. I agree with the other gents have had to say about the SL-7. It is a shooter and is more accurate than I was able to shoot it. I kept the 940(30-06) and have used it for deer hunting and it does quite well. I think that if I could find a used SL-7 that was in good shape, I would get it for my-self if I could afford it.

Suckersrus: That sounds like the HK05. They are high. I had a 3-9X50 Leupold Vari-X II on it during a misguided fit of setting it up as a low light woods gun. Too darn heavy. I now have the VariX-III 2.5-8 on mine. Much better scope. Fitting a scope can be problematic if the rear power adjustment ring interferes with the HK drum sight. The scope I use fits IF the sight is set to the 100 yard open notch. Most Leupolds will fit if you put the turrets up against the front ring.

The price, while more than I paid is in line with asking prices in GunList for a full setup. GunList sets are typically carbine, mount, a few mags (usually at least one 10 rounder). The nice thing on this rifle is that the 2-3 rounders fit flush for better field carry when hunting.

Here in Virginia, the last SL7 I saw at a show was going for $900 sans mount or extra mags. That was high, but it sold. SL6's are even harder to find.

FYI: You will need METRIC allen keys to field strip the rifle to clean the bolt.

The main difference from a US and Euro version is the US version had a slotted handguard, probably since they were being imported in the mid-1980's during the first "assault rifle" craze, and it made them look paramilitary along with the Mauser-type butt. Not sure if true, but I have heard they were developed for a South American military, but that country felt the price was too high.
