subsonic .22s enough for raccoons, with body shots, in your opinion? Or use more gun to be ethical? .22 hi-vel? Or .22 magnum? Or hellwithit- use .223? I'm gonna clear a few of these off my corn soon - they must not be reading the sign that says For deer and turkeys only.

Coons are much tougher than you would think. Full power .22's even take time to kill them unless you get a head shot.

My only run in with a raccoon was 10 yards and a .22 lr using high velocity hp stingers, and it took 8 to the body before it fell outta the tree and then 1 to the brain cage at point blank range. I would go with something with a bit more horsepower. .223 at a minimum. But thats me

Actually, the best coon weapon isn't a rifle at all. It's a shotgun - especially if they are tree'd. Shotgun is significantly safer. With a large sized shot (#2's or BB), they die pretty quickly.

Aguila 60 gr 22LR should work pretty well if you can get them to shoot well. They out penetrate a high-velocity 22 by 2 to 1. But go for head shots, its quicker and safer.

.22 shorts are the only thing legal in Kansas. Always shoot between those glowing red eyes though.

i saw a hurt leg racoon and i shot it with a 22lr with i think some cheap remington stuff. It was either that or my sks and that might cause trouble with the neighbors:p It tok about 8 or 9 shots.

Keyholing and poor accuracy can be a problem. The drop on SSS is extraordinary, so for a headshot you wouold have to range it pretty accurately.

I think ordinary 40gr would be easier to kill with.

Thanks all.

I'll use the Aguila SSS if going for headshot, or a .223 for body shots - haven't decided yet.

My Ceiner .22 conversion for AR15 is deadly accurate and dead on at 50 yards with Aguila SSS, and I'll be shooting from no more than 20 yards, but still, those beady blowing eyes might be moving around, so I'll probably run with a .223, in case I miss the head and hit the body.

I have used the SSS on more 'coons than I can count and a solid body hit always ended up with a dead coon that didn't fight death too hard. It is the best .22lr period for 'coons and I have used just about every 22 to find out.

I say get some, and shoot them, if your gun shoots them well then you will be well off with them. I use them in a cheap Romanian trainer .22 that is VERY accurate with them and the 23" bbl is so quiet with they it aint funny.
