Is a short barrelled S&W 686 too big to carry?

Does anyone think I could really get away with carrying a S&W 686 snubby, IWB? I've got the 4" model but that's not practical. Love the snubby. I know the exposed hammer could screw me up, but it does seem to make it easier (for me) when at the range. Thanks!

I've gotten away with the same frame 3" 696, carried IWB in summertime shorts and an untucked sport shirt already. So it's definitely possible.

I should say that I'm a large guy. I'm sure that helps with concealment.

With a decent holster and gun belt, concealing a snubby 686 is no problem at all. I've carreid my 686 IWB many times without issues.

I'm a big guy ,so when I tried CCW a 686 snubby , concealment was not a problem. It's heavier than my M 66's which I didn't like ,wider as well. The reason I got rid of it was shooting it. The Hogue Bantam and the 125 grain magnums made for the most unpleasant range trip I've ever had. 100 rounds and it was sold the next day. Feeling returned to my finger tips day after that. Regards 18DAI.

My grandfather actually has one, so I may try IWB with his before I order it. When I've shot it, it's been a handful, but still fun. More practice and I think I could handle it as well as my 4" version.

Most of this depends on your size. I am 6'4" and weigh 275#. I routinely carry a 3.5" Model 27 in an Alessi Hideout IWB holster. With appropriate cover clothing (untucked shirt, photographer's vest, etc.), it is unnoticeable. An L frame would give me no trouble at all.

Now if you are 5' nothing and weigh 95#....

The BIG problem when carrying concealed is what sticks out above the holster. With a good IWB rig like the one made by Milt Sparks or Lou Alessi (there are some others as well--check the holsters forum at www.pistolsmith.com), you can most probably carry a 4" concealed as well.

Grips, a person's love handles, belt width--that all makes a lot of difference.

686 perfect for travel

Brothers,

I have one revolver in my collection its a S&W 686 w/rubber grips. I got it for its punch. I also felt a reliable wheel gun was priceless in a real jam.

However, I carry it in a modified fanny pack w/3 spare speed loaders. In a holster I prefer to carry my G-26. No hammer, more rounds and its lighter...
