Is a Hand Recount Best for the Country

IMHO:
1. What the Florida Supreme Court did was to make law.
2. The Broward standard for "intent of the voter" is invalid.
3. If the U.S. Supreme Court acts based on law, they will deny the recount.
4. Politically, it would be best to do a full recount, in all Florida counties, with very conservative and consistent interpretation of "intent of the voter". GWB would win.

Number four would give Bush the best environment in which to govern, but in my opinion, it would ignore the rule of law and the constitution. I think it better to bring the court system back to interpreting law and not making it. This would be most consistent with my personal philosophy, but rough on Bush.

Of course, we all know that anything short of giving Gore the prize will not silence the left and the media. Should a recount go forward and Bush win, they would still attack him.

What outcome would be best?

Political Divide

These United States are experiencing the effects of the Government Party being challenged by a political faction of the Libertarian Right. The Government Party requires an ever growing stream of tax money to replenish its coffers and pay off its docile base. The Libertarian Right desires Government to remain unobtrusive and not TOO expensive. The Government Party almost always wins, because they are glamourous in the eyes of the scribes and praise singers of the LEFT.

I'm not certain what that last reply means but I'm sure that future generations of scribes will find if fascinating ;).

I believe that your own assessments are correct. The sheep will be more accepting of number four but the results are that Bush would be the winner of an illegal election. A very dangerous precedent to set in my opinion.

Number three is the only way to go now that things have degenerated this far. Yes, it will be tougher on Bush but the country will be stronger for it in the long run. This nation is not what it is because of the random and ever changing will of the people... we are strong because we are a nation of laws of the people.

At this point, to be honest, I’d take a victory any way we can get it.

No one is counting votes. The gorons are making up votes. Until we get the focus on the fraudulant practice of discerning the intent by filling in the literal blanks Gore will continue to look legitimate. This is the same old bull that got Clinton off. The votes have been counted and if you don't know that you do now.

People Are Such Idiots

This whole mess is about how best to divine the intent of the voter. What about simply examining the ballot and see whom he actually voted for? If a voter is too stupid to follow instructions, the vote is lost. If the voter is old old or infirm or blind or whatever assistance is available.

Last poll I saw had about 50% saying we needed a recount. The media has focused all of the attention on FL, but the principle of intent and subsequent recount should apply to all fifty states if it is valid.

And about 50% of people believe this stuff.

Ed-
Sandra Day O'Connor expressed the exact sentiments yesterday. She stated that the most objective criteria were those published in newpapers, posted in polling places and printed on the actual ballot.

Should the vote be counted by objective standard? I think this would be marginally beneficial for the nation. Unfortunately, it would be seriously detrimental to the legal process. Ultimately, Jesse Jackson's voice is louder than Antonin Scalia's and Americans tend to listen to the loudest voice...so a recount will always result in Dubya having "stolen the election".

In any case, Gore is finished politically. His party will continue to use him to get sympathy votes in 2002 from the uninformed. But he's got as much chance of seeing left wing support as Newt Gingrich and the right. Too much baggage...and they didn't exactly love him out of the gate.

A handcount is correct, if there were a standard for all counties. The Fl SC requested this, but they could not set a standard since it changes current law. After this is all over a standard should be set, and hopefully dimple ballots are not accepted since they are potentially made during manufacturing. IE, a manufacturer could accidently add dimples to a category, to favor a candidate.

The previous two machine counts were more accurate than a hand count could ever be. The machines are all certified accurate to 1 vote per million. A hand count could not approach that accuracy. Why would we want to replace two more accurate counts with one less accurate count?

Besides, that would still require changing the rules after the election. Will of the people or rule of law?

I believe that JJR is correct. There is no way to have an objective recount now. The ballots from Palm Beach and Broward County have been compromised (all the additional chads on the floor) by the democrat hand counters who have handled, folded, spindled, and mutilated them.

If there were to be a hand recount, the only fair way to do it would be to have the votes be counted by thousands of people from an isolated country who have no idea who Gore or Bush are, what the issues are, what the election could mean to them, and don't care.

Wait a minute---that describes my neighbors. :)

The President isn't the President of the State of Florida; he is the President of the entire United States of America. If hand counting is the most accurate way to count votes (it isn't), then every vote in every precinct in every county in every state in the entire nation ought to be given the same advantage of the votes in Florida, of being counted the "most accurate" way possible.
