Is a 4x12 variable power scope enough for a varmint / long range medium game rifle ?

I'm thinking of getting a rifle in 243 cal for both varmint and light skinned medium game........do you think the 4x12 power scope is a good choice , thanks ?

Sure it is. A bit light in magnification for seeing dogs at 500 yds, but still, a good all around variable choice for the game you've described.

I have a 2x7 on my .243. I've had no trouble on prairie dogs to 300 yards with it. When doing my walking-around and sneaky-snake deer hunting, I keep the scope set on 2X.

IOW, a 3x9 should be plenty good for most shooting, and I certainly wouldn't want more than 4x14--although I've never gone that big with a scope...

what does a sneaky-snake deer look like?

If you do your sneaky-snake part right, it'll be wrapped in white freezer paper.

If you jack it up, it'll be fast, moving away, and waving a white flag at you.

14 max is the lowest I like to go. I think the 12 will get it done though.

I have a 6x24 on my .243 I like lots a scope power. Some are different and that's OK too.

I use a stright Leupold 12X in a dog town. I have target turrets and a small dot reticule. I don't remember the dot size. I have no trouble hitting dogs at 300 yards.

When I was hunting groundhogs back in Illinois, I never had a scope with more than 16X. My go to rig for hogs was a Remington 700BDL 22-250 and a Weaver K10 scope on it.

Arrgh , I couldn't resist.......I found a great deal on a 6 x 18 variable power scope with Adj. Obj. and figured I'll give it a try ! More likely more scope than I may need but what the hay ! Thanks for the replies and happy hunting !
