Is a .45 can quiet enough for the backyard?

Providing the legal requirements are met for space and location, is a .45 suppressor (specifically a YHM can) quiet enough to shoot...

1.W/0 earplugs,comfortably
2.and not upset neighbors

thanks

I've shot a Kimber with a Gemtech and it wasn't enough to bother the neigbors but like the others mentioned it was louder than you might imagine. Like shooting a paintball gun with the barrel close to your ear.

My experience mirrors other here. I have a 45 can and have been dissapointed at just how loud it is.

Had I known how loud 45 cans are, I would have bought a .30 cal can or a 9mm one or something.

Now my Gemtech Vortex II .22 can is a work of art and truly quiet.

.45 can on other calibres

So I have a .45 can coming, could I plan to use it on my .40's & 9mm as well. Do you think it will be effecive?

Suppresser can work with different calibers but remember that shooting a 9mm thru a 45 can would be like going to bed with my ex-wife it gets the job done but its louder and could be better.

Well, pretty much all .45 ACP cartridges are subsonic and that type of ammo is the key for an effective "can". I shot a 1911 once that had a "can" on it and it wasn't too loud. Other than the sound of the action and the bullet hitting it's target, I was pretty impressed with its quietness. Of course then again I was out in the open and not in a backyard where sound can bounce of neighbor's houses/fences.

In my experience, a good can on a .45 pistol reduces the sound to about that of a .22 Short out of a rifle. Not loud, but definitely enough for close neighbors to notice. The almost "silent" cans of the movies are fakes; the "pffft" sound is dubbed.

I'm not sure if that was appropriate, but I'm laughin' my rear-end off!

That's some funny stuff right there.

But anyway, I had the opportunity to fire some sort of 45 HK carbine at the range a few months ago. It was really quiet, to the point all you really heard was the TING of the bullet and the cycling of the action. CLACK CLACK.

I've got a video of a bowers can being fired wet, its about as close to silent as your going to get with a .45, I'll see if i can't dig up a link.

I've got an SWR HEMS on an HK Tac that is pretty darn quiet when wet. I haven't actually shot it in my backyard (it wouldn't be safe here) but from a noise standpoint I think it would be acceptable.
