I heard different stories on how .243 rifles are not accurate at all and how they are failures. How true is this? I have found no luck on .223's as far as finding a decent rifle with a wood stock around my area. Im thinking about a .243 which is popular around my area but i cant figure out this! Id appreciate any helpful advice! Thanks!

A .243 can be very accurate with the right load. I have a relative that hunts with it exclusively, and has taken 4 deer in the past 6 years with it. I wouldn't hesitate to buy one if given the chance. They simply aren't that popular where I live, and ammo is scarce.

Absolutely nothing wrong with a 243. You can load light bullets and shoot varmints all day or load up some heavier bullets and have a perfectly capable deer cartridge. A 243 was the first rifle I ever owned and I killed a lot of deer with it. I had no idea how weak & ineffective it is until I started reading gun forums. Surprisingly the deer & coyotes I killed with it never knew either & since they can't read, it's still a secret to them.

My first deer rifle was a .243 ...... Remmy 788. Far more accurate than I was, and I managed to kill several deer and coyotes with it.

Bad luck not finding a good .233, those can be very accurate as well.

There are very few cartridges that are not accurate in the right rifle.

The .243 is a wonderful caliber! No worries mate, it can do a lot for a little. I owned one years ago, and it was a love affair I assure you!

I think the poster is simply pulling our chain.

If he or she had done even the slightest research, the question would not of been posted. I have a .243 along with a number of other rifles.

Anytime I see a post about a caliber or a gun I own, I read it. I have read very little negative press or comments about the .243. Yes, there are always poor guns here and there in every round.

Some accuracy examples from years past. Some were 200 yd. shots with groups quite a bit under one inch. The rifle was purchased in the late 70's and is still shot and still accurate.

When I was very young the 30-30 was what everyone had, then later it was the 30-06, today most of the people I hunt deer with use the 243 and I have moved to the 25-06.

So in a word the 243 is an excellent chose and very accurate. I have seen more one shot kills with a 243 then I would like to admit.

accurate

The .243 is an accurate ctg based on the 308 case. Seems like a major, national long range type match was recently won w/ a .243, maybe F-open, not sure. As a match ctg it is thought of as "overbore", burning a lot of powder for the bore/case size (my simple definition) and barrel life is short, maybe half of a .308, .223 or one of the new 6mm 6.5 combos.

With the right slug it is a good deer ctg when placed appropriately. Beure not to pick "varmint' slugs for der size game.

In Mexico we say if the river is noisy is because there is water and you found the high
Current amigo.

243 win?? Let me think ..........
O I ment which one out off my safe, Browning, wetherby, sako, remington.

Adios from USA TEXAS.;)

I think it's more the gun than the caliber in this case. I highly recommend the Savages, everyone I've seen has shot sub moa groups right out of the box. The one thing to mention with a .243 is it does have a shorter barrel life than some rifles, but it's nothing super short either. If I was just target shooting I'd prefer a .223. If I was hunting and target shooting I'd get the .243.

bullethole1: You are in San Antonio, and you cannot find a suitable 223? Have you checked Drury's? If they don't have one, I am sure they can get you one quick.

Not sure why you'd say it isn't a good caliber. Here's what the sniper forum has to say:

The .243 would be an excellent Law Enforcement sharpshooter caliber. It provides good energy and good trajectory with some mid weight bullets. There are not the same over penetration concerns in the military (At least not generally) so really there isn't any Military use for the .243, anything the .243 can do, the .308 can do also with a bit heavier bullet. But with some of the new .243 match loads that are coming out, it could make a very good mid range sniper rifle.
