Is 8x57 the same as 8mm?

I'm getting ready to purchase my first k98. The one I found is chambered for 8x57mm. Is that the same as 8mm? Thanks in advance.

Yes, but there are a few other rounds that might concieveably cause confusion. Most notably the 8x56mmR.

If you are buying factory ammo, just make sure you are buying ammo marked 8x57 mm Mauser, or 8mm Mauser.

There is more than one "8mm" cartridge, but 8x57mm is probably by far the most common "8mm" rifle cartridge. Note that it is also referred to as 8mm Mauser and 7.92mm Mauser.

When I bought my M1895 Steyr the dealer tried to tell me it was a regular 8mm, but after closer inspection lo and behold it was chambered for the 8x56. No big surprise to anyone who knows anything about the rifle, but definitely ask folks other than the dealer if you have any question.

The "modern" 8x57mm Mauser cartridge is also called 8x57JS. The bullet diameter is .323".

The old (pre 1910, or so) 8x57mm Mauser is 8x57J, which has a bullet diameter of .318", if I remember correctly.

So you can shoot old bullets (any around?) in new guns, but not new ammo in old guns (not many around, either). This is why American commercial 8x57JS is downloaded to 170gr at 2200fps - so it won't blow up old guns.

8x57JS is fully capable of 180gr at 2700fps, or 150gr at 3000 - 3100 fps, which I prefer.

ps- S&B manufactuers new, non-corrosive, full-power, 196gr ammunition. About $12 per box at my local gun shop.
