Is $675 too much to pay for a Sig P228?

I have come accross a chance to buy the following pistol:

Sig Arms P228, 9mm has less then 200 rounds with 2 10 round factory,3 after market 13 round magazine, Springecliper Holster and Hoge grips all Factory packageing Near NEW COND.

The owner wants 675 but is out of state. I wont have to pay sales tax but I will have to pay shipping and FFL transfer, etc...

Is this a good price? If I choose to buy it I will have three days to return it (my cost) if it turns out to be junk.

Is this a reasonable price? The Hicaps are aftermarket, unfortunately, but other than that it is one of the pistols that is on my short list for my wife (see my other thread).

Let me know what you think as I really have no idea what this should go for.

The extras probably make it fair. I think you could get a new one in the $500-550 range, but no goodies. I'd have the hicaps seperately and to my house, or even to Grandma out of state, since this will have to go through an FFL in Kali, hence he won't let you have them if he values his butt

Gotcha Shipley... They are for my father in NV. He thinks he might someday want to buy a P228 too, so I would give him the hi-caps as a late fathers day gift. :]

thanks

A different opinion here, meant in a friendly way. It's way too much. You should be able to find a factory-new P228 with 2 10x mags for $600 or less. The non-factory hi-caps are IMO literally worthless, unless they're Mec-Gar (which might as well be factory, since they OEM for many manufacturers, including SIG). The extra three rounds don't prove anything on the range, and with very, very few exceptions aftermarket hi-caps aren't even worth using for "games" like IDPA, much less self-defense. You're better off with 10 shots guaranteed than 13 shots "maybe." The seller is asking a premium for mags that are probably worth less than factory 10-round mags.

I think you should be able to do better. :-(

I must agree with JNewell.
Pick up a Shotgun News, or Gun List and you should be able to find a better deal.

The price would be good if new and the standard cap mags were factory, those are $80+ a piece. The fact that they're aftermarket should add negatively to the price of the gun. Offer $600 out-the-door.

I agree too, now that I re-read it and see the evil term "aftermarket." Unless these are Mec-Gar, forget it.

A company called R Guns seems to have good mag prices, if memory serves. They are in SGN.

Gotta join the chorous here. The price is way to high for a used P228 with questionable prebans. Those things might ne USA mags or worse, those evil no name prebans that cut cruelly into fingers when you try to load them and then jam on every round. Ask if the prebans are MecGars and deal from there. Make sure to contact www.precisionarmory.com and www.bachmangun.com They also have pretty good prices on SIG Sauer products. For mags check out www.cdnninvestments.com Their prices are tough to beat.

I have to question the remark about no sales tax. I thought the FFL in your state that received the transfer would charge you the applicable sales tax for your state. Is this incorrect?......Dan in GA

Thanks for the input guys... I think I will pass on this one.

As far as the sales tax goes... thats a good question. I have no idea if the FFL location charges sales tax on an out of state transfer. I made the assumption that they wouldnt unless it was from their own source or ordered from the factory, but I may be mistaken. Anyone from California ever bought an out of state gun that went through an FFL?

Seems like too much to me. My wife got a used cop P228 with 2 13 round mags and night sights for $550 late last year. I saw a few later at Caswell's in Phoenix for $500, and these were factory reconditioned. I would look elsewhere, or bring the price down a bit.

Went to the largest (and usually most expensive) gun shop in town and saw the 228 for $700+. New and everything standard; I don't think it had night sights. I was shocked.

Was looking to perhaps (someday, maybe) trade in my 225 for the 228, but the $100-200 price difference from my 225 purchase price to the new 228 is probably too high.

Oh well... still love my 225.

Just saw a NIB P228 for $620. Two versions out there, one German made and US assembled and another German made and German assembled. Check out www.sigforum.com for more info.

R Guns, are the "worst"- and I don't say that about many gun dealers. Nasty, mean spirited individuals.

Although, B Shipley- your intention was great :).

Tecolote,

I followed your link.. thanks! I didnt know they were out there...

But, I did not see the things you mentioned. Are they still there?

J.T.

Bachman Pawn & Gun in Dallas has them NIB for $529-$549. I don't have the sheet with me so will post correction Monday if necessary.
