Is $350 fair price for new Police Positive Special?

My local FFL has a used, new-model Colt Police Positive Special (shrouded extractor) with a 4" barrel for $350. I'm not up on Colt Revolver prices so I'm wondering if anyone here has an opinion.

The gun shows a tiny bit of wear and overall is about 98%. It's in excellent shape and the gun's timing is good. Grips are not original and I'd have to find some replacements however.

Other than that, it's a nice specimen.

Be warned, grips are none too plentiful. Patience and shopping e-bay are the only route to originals. www.eaglegrips.com does have faux ivory grips. I am looking at a 70s vintage PP for $300.00. $350.00 in CA seems quite reasonable.

Thanks Sir William.

I may go there Monday to see if he still has it and pick it up. Such a nice little gun, though I'd guess it'd be a handfull with 158gr JHPs!

Not great but not bad

I have seen them from 300 to 400, 400 which I feel is to high, good guns but nothing to write home about.
If you ever want a good place to check the price of guns you can look at the attached location.
Be warned its like E bay, buyer be cairfull.

My Police Positive Special handles 158 gr JHPs with no trouble. IIRC, they were set up for 158 gr sightwise by Colt. 158 gr was pretty much a police standard load. I run 158 gr non-+P JHPs in mine. Follow-up shots are a little erratic due to the grips. The Cobra style grips are oversized and I put a set on the PPS, I shoot it much better.

Interesting little PP Special just came my way. No money, I like that! The trouble is, some gungorilla has been at the action. It indexes and locks up solid on five and completely misses on the sixth chamber. I think it has a bad hand and extractor star. Decent looking revolver though. Free, I can't complain.

Well, I purchased the Colt Police Positive Special on Monday and will have to wait the  10 days while California delays my RKBA for their red tape. But it's such a purdy gun that I couldn't let it be lonely on the shelf.

This is a "late model" PPS and it looks kinda like a Detective Special with a 4" barrel. It has some klunky wood grips on it that are about as attractive as a piece of 2x4 rounded off. Does anyone know if D.S. grips will fit the PPS? If I can't find a decent pair I'll resort to Pachmayr grips.

Your new PPS will take any grip made for a newer Detective Special, Cobra, Agent, or Diamondback.

The original grips look like the late, walnut wrap-around grips used on the Detective Special, except they're slightly longer.

The late PPS used the same grips as the Colt Viper.

Gun Parts Corporation MAY have originals:

Hereabouts that would be a good price for one in that condition.

(I should have never traded off my post-'72 PPS . . . :( )

The original grips on a shrouded barrel ,later manufacture but not the underlug barrel, COULD have been checkered with thumbrest on both sides and no Colt emblem. Thats how mine came new in the box. These are very comfortable grips! The detective specials of same era have rubber grips with a colt emblem and are the BEST for handling say AGENT recoil with +P ammo. But being you're in Calif about 60 miles away (I live in the Aptos hills over 17 and toward Watsonville) I have a set of grips as Ferriswheel described for your new purchase. In my opinion they don't fit that great, you can see a thin sliver of mainspring thru the top rounded portion of grip to frame when I mounted them on my PPS , and they look silly on my agent, where they came off of. :)
