Is 1970s Chilean .308 call any good?

It works fine in my 91. Just be sure to clean your rifle right away because it is corrosive. Mercurial primers and all that I believe.

If you can find the '83 Argentine stuff, several people here have commented on how accurate it is. I goes under an inch out of my AR10T and under 2 inches out of an M1A. The Turners chain sometimes has it and I believe they have a website at www.turners.com

NOT ALL OF IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Watch out for the 74 and 75!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oleg My friend do yourself a favor and check out FNFAL.com under the ammuntion forum. There are a few other references to Chilean blow ups other than mine. I bought 600rds for $65 and almost destroyed my FAL. In about a month, after I get together with some of my Fellow TFLers, I'll get "Dead" to take a picture my blow up and post it on TFL. Chilean ammo is associated with the word Blow UP more than any other .308 ammo out there.

Chilean is something to avoid. I have seen it blow the base out of a buddy's FAL mag. In fact I have seen it damage a 1919 which is truly an achievement as they are very robust.

TT

dont ever buy cavim..and i mean never...SA,PORT is good stuff..the best of the surplus is Hirt..just dont use Hirt in a bolt action..good luck

We meet again HK1. :p (Insert evil scientist laugh here)

I had some stuff from South America, I believe it was Chilean; it jammed every other round in my 91. I found this very surprising considering the 91/G3 is arguably the most reliable battle rifle ever made. I have never experienced a jam with the 91 before or since.

And yes I was using real HK mags. :D

Against Sodapop's advice, I shot up about 350 rounds of Chilean surplus, stamped 72-74, through my FAL. I had just bought 1000 rounds the day before he posted here to tell somebody else to watch out for it, so I was kinda stuck with it for time being.

Accuracy was sub-par. My normal 1-2" groups at 100yds with SA surplus spread out to a wopping 10-12" with the Chilean.

Functionality-wise was sub-par also. Athough I didn't get any 'blow-ups', my gas setting was able to be set at a conservative 7 (indicating a hotter load), and one out of every 10-15 rounds was a dud.

In all, the only reason I'm remotely happy with the purchase is because I got a good price locally even though it was the weekend after 9-11. Even though I picked it up for $110/1000, I think I'll let the 'good deal' pass me by next time.

The first time I took my FAL to the range with the Chilean I almost cried. I was getting 4-8in groups and I"M NOT KIDDING!!!!!!!!

Can you just imagine what it must have been like to be in the Chilean Military? Can you imagine fighting for your country with this ammo:eek:

I was shopping for .308 ammo for my Fal at a gun show and actually had a guy that was selling some of it with his other stuff advise me to NOT use it in my Fal.. I got some Portugese ammo instead and it works great. I would leave the Chilean stuff alone.
