Iron sights on gunsite scout.

Im real interested in this rifle. The size and weight are great and lop adjustability is aplus since i take a fairly long lop. It looks cool too. I just dont buy the scout concept and want to mount the scope standard. The iron sights are cool as im thinking that if i had a scope problem, id have a backup, and could keep hunting with irons. The rear has to be removed to mount scope though. Im wondering, does this return to zero when re mounted, and is it a quick process?

It's fairly quick, but I'd reconfirm zero after removing the rear sight and then putting it back on.

You should be fairly close when you put it back on, but it never hurts to check. I removed mine and put a traditional scope on, as I prefer that for what I'm using the rifle for right now. When Bear Season comes around I'll put the iron sights and rail back on, and mount my red dot. Of course I'll reconfirm zero when I do that.

I would loktite the rear sight in place and make sure it's tight. Then when remounting it, I'd try to get it as tight as before.

If you're sold on that particular rifle, then have at it, but what a lot of folks don't realize is that the idea of having backup iron sights is as old as the hills. Back in the day when I started shooting, every rifle came with iron sights and we mounted scopes on them regularly. One of my favorite rifles, a Rem700 has irons and a scope. That's not the fashion in this century, although several of my rifles have irons and scopes. Check your local pawn shops for such rifles.

LOP is easily adjusted through spacers, just like the Ruger Gunsite. This is nothing new either. Shotgunners have been doing this for years. Any gunsmith worth his salt can add irons to a rifle. And add spacers for your LOP. My gunsmith knows my LOP and he'll trim the stock, install a recoil pad and call me in a week. His price, installed, is really competitive with buying the pad online and having it shipped. I'm sure he makes a few bucks off the job, but not many.

If what you're looking for is that big box magazine, I'm told that Savage is coming out with a 10 round box that they'll unveil at the NRA show in May, in Chicago.

I like Ruger rifles, I own several, and I think they're grand. However, options exist. Explore them all and have fun.

I was actually looking at 77s before this, this on is just handy size and weight whil maintaining the medium barrel, i dont like skinny barrels. It looks cool with the laminate stick too.

I keep trying to talk myself into the same rifle. Ghost ring sights are fairly forgiving if they don't go back on just perfect. Still, I would want to re-zero before I hunted with it. It's too bad Ruger didn't design the rifle to allow both the rear iron sight and a reciever mounted scope. If it weren't for that I would have one by now. It'll be interesting to see if they come out with other models along this line.

I wish they allowed a forward mounted iron sight like older hunting rifles. Of course i wouldnt ask for moa or anything re mounting, just hunting distance minute of deer. Id just hate to go home because of a scope problem.

The magazine choice for the GSR is a deal breaker for me....I have a CZ with a single stack...my first and last single stack....the CZ is exceptional...except for the magazine. With that in mind....I have been giving the new Ruger Compact Magnum in 308..a real hard look. It is of the same length overall as the GSR...a little lighter....has the iron sights...not peep...but a NECG will do nicely....and it has the internal/blind magazine....which can be topped off as you go...a choice that works much better for me.

Spuscg....you get your forward of the scope/barrel mounted iron sights.

I like that its a double duty rifle, Its light enough to hunt but is spposedly very accurate off the bench. A bipod, sling and decent glass you have a nice setup.

I have been looking at the Compact Magnum in 308 too, but it doesn't look like Ruger has started production on them yet. The more I read about the GSR the more I like it, including the ghost ring sights. I was off today so I have spent most of the day reading gun stuff. One guy on another forum claims that he chrono'd Hornady's Superformance 150 gr ammo at 2890 fps from his GSR. This is pretty impressive considering the advertised velocity is 3000 from a 24" bbl. Makes anything more than the 16.5 bbl look excess.

I wonder how hard it would be to fit a regular M77 stock with bottom metal and internal magazine on a GSR? Could be an interesting hybrid. I don't care for detachable mags on a hunting rifle. I also don't know why Ruger has to put it's goofy flash hider on every gun it makes now. On a 10/22? Really?

Come on Rob. Catch up with the times. You can't have a "tactical" rifle without a flash hider.
Seriously though I suppose it makes it nice to have a factory threaded barrel for those wanting to utilize suppressors.
I really enjoy my ruger rifles & recently added a hawkeye tactical 243 to the line-up. For whatever reason though, the GSR doesn't grab my attention all that much. I do however like the path ruger is taking as of late with the SR-556, SR-1911, various CCW models, hawkeye tactical, & 10/22 target tactical as well as the GSR.

Yes, Ruger has really become a great company now that old Bill has passed on to greener pastures.

For what it's worth, at least the flash hider protects the muzzle and makes it look like an adult-sized rifle.

Now to really derail this discussion: I have been researching scout scopes and the quality ones (Leupold, Burris) only come in 2.5 magnification. Seems to me a 308 deserves at a minimum a 4x scope. There are lots of cheap Chinese models out there but I have problems putting cheap glass on a $750 rifle. I want to justify one of these rifles so bad. Almost there...

The Ruger Scout rifle and scout rifles in general offer very few if any advantages to 99% of rifleman. Nice, semi compact carbines are nothing new and are far from hard to find. New and used, with sights and without .

As for the sights, if you take em off and put em back on they will be close enough to hit anything you are liable to be able to hit. A couple thousands of difference with irons translates into "close enough". Have you ever seen how far most click adjustable sights move with each click? You can actually see them move.
