Now that Iran has grown tired of talking, can you guess what will happen next? Whatever your thoughts on pre-emptive strikes, it isn't the first and it won't be the last, but more than one source has mentioned tactical nuclear weapons. How will the world react? What happened to the US policy of using nuclear weapons as a deterrent and for retaliation only? Could this invite similar strikes on disputed foreign US bases? Doesn't it set a bad precedent for other countries?

Thoughts.

Doesn't it set a bad precedent for other countries?

Most of the countries with the capabilities are not waiting for a precedent, just a slimy oppurtunity to do it without a retailiatory vaporizing.

How will the world react?
I don't know for sure, but I would assume that it would be a mix of sadness, anger, fear, and utter lack of suprise? Kind of like "oh, America is bombing another middle eastern country, what's on The Wheel tonight?".

The article gives lots of attention to Israel and UN. Iran has been a thorn in their collective sides for a very long time. It seems, if we read the article, the they want the thorn "removed" and would prefer that the US take the political fall for it, as well as the retaliation, both while shouldering the majority of the manpower and resource burdens. Wow, sounds like Iraq to me.

Either way, I don't see the US using a nuclear option, even if the diplomatic track fails. There have been too many opportunities to do it already that have not been taken. I think that any pre-emptive strikes will use, as the article suggested, conventional warfare and covert operations.

Could this invite similar strikes on disputed foreign US bases?

Most likely, yes. But again, the countries doing the disputing have the means and only choose not to act because of fear, not the desire for peace. Yes that statement may seem a bit general, but look at the areas in question. The Koreas, the Middle East, Southern Asia, and Eastern Europe. All regions with a recent history of violence and instability. They aren't waiting for a President's Picnic.
But, personally, I think we should withdraw from all of them, so I can see my family more than 12 months at a time. ;)

If pre-emption occurs, it will likely not be the US. May I respectfully suggest that there is another nation in the region: (a) with a VERY capable military; (b) with nuclear weapons; (c) with a history of preemptory strikes against Iranian atomic facilities; and (d) a good deal more to loose than the US, were Iran to develop deliverable/deployable nuclear weapons.

My idea of it all........

I guess me being the Silly Headinsand Redneck that I have been honorably named I will throw down my short thought on this whole nuke and fear issue.

I sorta look at the US as a wildcat on a hot tin roof.......dance around on it ..... (mostly political crap) Hiss and show teeth on certain issues worth responding on. As long as we stay scrapy, lean and mean (which I think in many ways we are) yet not get too hungry for action......... and as long as the mice keep doing what mice (and rats do) It turns into a different kind of cold war.......... different rules but not all that much different in the real long run................ It will continue to cost American tax payers as it did for the last 100+ years in one form or another....... But, that is just my take....... ;)

Sure, we have some new rule books, and the first rule is: When they play they don't follow our rule book or value system........... Some parts never had a rule book......... can we expect them to play fair???????? Nope...... ;)

I hate to sound as an optomistic type but haven't the beheadings and similar practices slowed down a little....... (Thanking my God) Maybe, just maybe we are doing something right and worthy and.......... If there is a God that I respect and worship.........he might be a little on our side.......AGAIN....(STILL)

Iran will be the next Sadaam. The government and media will create this whole picture of how dangerous they are, they are trying to destroy us, they are all terrorists, etc. Then we start dropping bombs. If you need a secure job, go to work at a BOMB FACTORY. Those guys should be busy for the next ten years or so.

But, Tex, why would our government do such a thing? Aren't they just a bunch of swell guys who are doing their best to serve their country?

Actually, Iran like many middle eastern nations has a lot of oil. Sort of like...Iraq has (had) a lot of oil. Hmmm....
