Why are the IP's being logged on the SIGARMS thread, but not the Jokes 3, Range Report V or the Test Lost members thread?

I'm so glad I have a dynamic IP

I've just loaded the new software version. It includes IP logging. When I began the update, I realized that it was on. Therefore, I turned it off and reindexed the threads.

It's now disabled.

I sure hope our IP addresses don't get logged when we post, even though they're not visible here.

All the Socialist gun grabbers would have to do is supenea the logs from Firing Line and our privacy would be history.

When the time comes, I doubt they'll need TFL to figure it out. Ever bought a firearm? Ever applied for a CCW? Your IP is not being logged by me but can probably be traced by them.

Did you think "Rich Lucibella" was a handle?

Guys...
If you had clicked the IP Logging you'd see only admin and mods could see them.

A few months back, when a new version of the software came out it had visible IP and we disabled it as we didn't want visible IPs.

Don't worry...I'm as private and paranoid as they get

Thanks Rich for clearing that up.

I wouldn't have been to concerned if all the threads had been Looging IPs, cuz I the feds have easier ways of finding IPs. Its just that only one thread about a specific Firearm Manf. was showing IP logging, and the bothered me a little

IP = internet protocol
Its a number assigned to you computer/server so that the 'net know how to get stuff to get stuff to you. like the IP for the server TFL is running on right now is 216.199.9.84
when you type www.blahblah.com , the net goes to a server finds the IP associated with that name and then takes you to that IP.
Like wise, everytime you assess a site, you computer is telling the server that the IP you have been give is xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx so the server knows where to send the content.
at least thats how I understand it. I could be wrong in which case i apologize for having bad info

If you access a site you can be traced, there is something around to stop it, but why hide ? nothing illegal has been done here.
Hiding is just helping the other side.

If they really want to, they can find you. ISPs (internet service provider), businesses, schools etc. are given a block on IP addresses. In the beginning, you could tell how big a company was by the first 2 portions of the IP, but that no more I think.
With Dial up ISPs, you are typically assigned an IP when you log on, so you'll rarely have the same IP. But the ISP can go through its records and find out what you IP was at a specific session, so things can be traced back to you.
I wasn't concerened about thing being traced, it was just odd that only one thread was being monitored.

Nope. wasn't aware of that. I hope its a halfway decent site.

Now you tell me! In all honesty, after I posted the note, I saw that the new software Rich loaded must automatically make ww*.anything into a link. So, I clicked on it. After I was finally able to get off the floor from laughing, I debated whether to go in and change it - naah. It does make you wonder how many screwy expressions have been made into web sites, though.

OK, so as a moderator here, I can use IP logging. Why for and what for? Sounds like work for this lazy civil servant.

Speaking of serving, has anybody else here ever read old letters which were closed with: "I have the honor, Sir, to be your humble and obedient servant."

It was used quite a bit in the 1700's and fell from favour after WWI.

I am reminded of a friend who got an M1 through DCM but wouldn't tell anyone the serial number because the Government might find out he had it.
