Internal lock ?

S&W M&P9c compact came with an internal lock and I am unsure exactly how it works and the purpose it serves.

Also would like to purchase a thumb safety. Any tips?

How the lock works? Not to be a smart ass, but that's why they put those little instruction books in the box when you buy a gun.

Now, if you got the gun used, and it didn't have an instruction book with it, I'll apologize for the seemingly smart-ass answer and tell you that you can probably find the owners manual on Smith&Wesson's website. They'll also send you a hard copy for free.

This should help.

clarification ...

It did come with a manual and I have read it thoroughly. It says nothing of any safety. The website I bought it from, under the description, listed it's safety as internal lock. I've done some surfing and have found no clear answer of how it actually works. Is this something I can adjust? It did not come with a key for any internal lock. My search results for my particular firearm is proving fruitless, which is why I posted to a thread.

No offense taken btw. I would have replied the same thing, about reading the manual. Like I said, the manual says nothing of an internal lock, but the website does: http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/41347
Comparing the manual (from the link you provided) to the description from this one.

I saw how to disengage this type of lock in similar firearms, but no results for my weapon. The link you have provided is exactly like the manual I received.

Your response is appreciated.

I don't know about that specific model, but generally those locks are to lock the gun from unauthorized use. They generally have a "key", usually nothing more than an Allen wrench or some other type of tool to "lock/unlock" them. There will be a keyhole in the gun somewhere, you put the key in, turn it one way to lock, the other to unlock. It's not a "safety" in the conventional sense, but a lock for storage. I believe the M&P model has a glock type hinged trigger as it's "safety" but I've never actually even looked at one, that's just from what I've read.

Most people unlock them and throw the key away. If yours works, it's unlocked.

I still would like to now how to lock/unlock it for storage purposes but I suppose the lock I have is sufficient. Thank you.

Page 28, in the link provided by Cajunbass, has some information on the lock. As to it's purpose, well.............
