Interesting Norinco M-14 metalurgy Info...

I just picked up my new Norinco M-14 today and I asked the distributor about the problems with bolt hardness, as experienced by a large number of owners in the past.

He stated " That the importer was concerned about the problem and prior to distribution of the model, the landed guns were shipped back to the manufacturer for modification". The current imports are apparently mil. spec. and all parts are supposed to interchange with US made parts. This should be a relief to new buyers. I suppose this only affects the import of arms into Canada though, due to the US trade embargo with China.

The new models are shipped with the flash suppressor installed, but without a bayonet lug, 2 Mags, Sling, Butstock cleaning kit and oil bottle(full). Mag cap is dismal 5 rds. (CDN. Law)

Markings are as follows:

M14 .308
CJA SFLD MICH
NORINCO MADE IN CHINA 0040XX

Overall, the gun looks to be manufactured with some commitment to quality. Fit and finish of the stock is a bit dissapointing, however all metal is nicely Parkerized to a med. grey color- including mags.

That import mark indicates the importer is in the U.S. I assume those can be imported into the U.S., so we should see them for sale here. (It seems unlikely the importer would bring them into the U.S. only to export them to Canada.)

Yes, the importer is in the U.S.,and I think that's why the bayonet lug is milled off at the factory. - The Pre ban/ Post Ban issue. Too many evils, I suppose. I don't understand how the guns can go through the U.S. and end up in Canada though. I figured the import ban would affect this. -Thoughts?

With regards to the rifle,
Is there a specific lubricant (like CLP) that will retard carbon buildup on the piston? Or is it even a concern?
Will it hurt the gas system to fire the rifle with the gas selector in the "off" position?
Finally, is there anywhere I can purchase Long mags with a max capacity of 5 rounds? The Norinco shorties are really tough to remove.

Piston is supposed to be put in the weapon dry, as I recall.

Don't see why not.. it's made that way for rifle grenade use.. so it's meant to be fired with the gas system off.

No place I know of.. though you might be able to get someone to butcher an aftermarket 20-rounder for you (please not USGI, they're scarce enough as it is!!) -- or failing that, weld a tab onto the floorplate of those you have?
