Thought I might pass this along from my morning newspaper, Local story.
Man dies of leg wound after his holstered gun goes off. Girlfriends race to hospital futile;death ruled accidental.
Seems he was carrying legally, IWB holster and just finished putting groceries in trunk, young son darted away, He reached over and down to grab the kid when the gun fired shooting him in the leg and hitting the main artery. The pistol a 9mm automatic may have been cocked inside the holster according to police. The girlfriend said He gave me the gun and said I've just been shot. She said she drove to the hospital as fast as she could, passing cars and running red lights and stop signs. She said we couldn't wait for an ambulance.
Sad tale, It would have helped if someone would have known first aid here and called an ambulance, he may have survived,He bled to death by the time he reached the hospital.
I hope all you guys that spend time at the range and out in the field know a little first aid and maybe carry or have on hand a cell phone. I do.

Safe and Happy Shooting/ no smiley for this one.

Considering the geometry involved in hitting the femoral artery with a shot from a holstered pistol, it couldn't have been a strong side behind the hip holster.

Please let us know if any details on the type of pistol and holster involved become available. I'm curious about any incidents of "spontaneous discharge".

The article did not get into holster position. But I would bet it was a frontal position between pocket and pants snap. That would be my logical conclusion. Will follow up if more is printed.

I had a simular accident just before I turned 21. Lost my right leg as a result. The .22 found the main artery just below the knee. Since it was the path of least resistance, it followed the artery all the way to the ankle. Conditions: Western style holster, warn on the side of the leg, between the front and back pockets. When the leg is bent slightly as in reaching down, the angle of the gun in the holster clears the upper leg and points directly behind the knee. I'll bet anything that this was the position of the holster he was wearing.

In my case I had just gotten done reloading it, was moving the hammer from the loading notch to the safety notch (ruger single six), while putting it back in the holster at the same time. Was a hot day. I was sweating. My thumb slipped off the hammer and it discharged.

Moral of the story: 1. You can never be to safe. 2. Always make sure that you know where that barrel is pointed. 3. It was my own stupid fault for breaking rules 1 & 2, not the guns, not the manufactures, no ones or nothings fault but mine.

Saw a cop show a few years back where they recreated an actual shooting. A perp was shot in the leg when a police officer returned fire. He was hit in the artery and was severly bleeding. The cop took off his belt and wrapped it around the perps leg and pulled it tight. Stopped the bleading and saved the mans life.

Shok

I sure would like to quote you on that one, sir! Your sense of personal responsibility is refreshing!

Bookkie, it's nice when someone puts his money where his mouth is, so to speak. It's easy to spout about taking responsibility, but it would also be easy for you to remain anonymous and quiet when something like this comes up.

Good post, Bookkie.

An uncle of mine, on my sainted mother's side, lost part of his leg from below the knee from a shotgun hunting accident back in the '30s. He had a prosthesis (?)... false leg/ankle/foot and got around pretty good. Most people didn't even know of his disability. I didn't for a long time.

We got to talking at hunting camp several years back and somehow we got to his accident. He had the same attitude. His fault. He was a fatalist. Funny too. He said it just made him meaner. I can vouch for that.

He was a very cool dude and the first person I ever knew that carried. 'Til he was in his 70s. He used to wear a hip length light coat all through the year because he carried a Colt SAA .45. In his late fifties he went to a S&W Combat Masterpiece and around 65 yrs went got a Chief's Special. All revolvers, you will notice. This was in central FL. Hot and humid. I can only now appreciate his dedication to RKBA!

Happened to a cop I knew some years ago. He had a Browning HP tucked in the front of his pants strong side and somehow it went off. Don`t recall why but it had to be due to his carelessness. He was off duty sitting in his car and the round went through his leg, the car seat and the floor board. Luckily he recovered and he got a rip from the dep`t for carrying an unauthorized weapon. I myself used to carry a Colt M1911 as a backup in Brooklyn and many of the cops I worked with did the same. This was when semi auto duty guns were just wet dreams. Many bosses were aware of this since on gun runs a lot of perps found themselves staring down the barrels of BIG semi autos rather than .38`s. I was as proficient with my .45 as I was with my service revolver but now I wonder how many of the others actually were.

Bookie;
Sorry to hear that and it goes to show that it can happen to anyone. It`s hard being human sometimes.
