I especially like this part.

Jefferson chose his words carefully when he drafted the Declaration Of Independence, observing the self-evident truth that people are created equal (a denouncement of monarchies) and that they are “endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights”. He could’ve used “the” or “our” in front of “creator”, but he didn’t. The founders who signed off on the document had a secular government in mind that would neither promote nor prohibit religious practice.

thoughts, feelings?

"All men are created equal"
This still puzzles me. What were they thinking about the dark skinned people especially in the southern colonies that were being treated as slaves? I guess this doesn't have anything to do with firearms. Sorry.

Look at the inaugural addresses of the first several Presidents. For a bunch of guys who wanted a secular government, they didn't have a problem with beseeching the deity (by whatever term) for help, guidance, or whatever, either personally or for the benefit of the country.

The Founders clearly didn't want religion to be an integral function of government, but neither did they banish it entirely.

I wonder how we lost that sense of balance.

I believe that the current battle over religion in govt is being fought by extemist hypocrits on both sides.

1% of the country wants a religion based govt. 1% of the country wants to banish religion from the face of the planet forever.

98% of the population couldn't care less if there's a nativity scene on the courthouse lawn. 98% of the population couldn't care less if "Christmas" was originally a celebration over the birth of Christ. NOBODY believes that Santa Claus or christmas trees are a religious figures.

I, for one, believe that religion should be the explicit and exclusive province of religious teachers/leaders. I do not believe that general public schoolteachers qualify for that and should not. I also don't believe that Courthouses and schools are places of worship and, thusly, shouldn't be places that teach worship or proclaim religious themes. I don't believe that they can't be USED for such by religious teachers/leaders as need arises. Just that for general uses they aren't intended for that purpose and shouldn't be used as such full time or regularly scheduled part of the time.

I have no problem with "the little drummer boy" as a play for 5th graders nor other christmas skits. They have an integral part in the development and socialization of children apart from the content of the play/skit. It's when the school only chooses or is allowed to only choose specific play/skit/educational themes that I begin to have a problem with religion in gov't/schools. When you limit the choices to only one, you have no counter point to draw your own conclusions from.

I also believe that if a person in a gov't position wishes to invoke whatever deity they follow for whatever PRIVATE and PERSONAL reason they have as an individual, that's fine. What I object to is when they start saying that their personal and private reason should also be MY (or my childs) personal and private reason invokable at their command with the subject being one they control.

I believe that most of the world follows this precept.
