Well, I caved in and bought a usedMark X Mannlicher style carbine. I was in the shop, looking for a .22 for bamaboy, and could not resist the Mannlicher (got the .22 for the boy too!)
Nice shape, pretty blonde wood, chambered in '06, conventional bolt knob, 20" tube. As the Mauser actions only come in one length, I can live w/ that, though in my mind I always thought I'd buy a short action Ruger RSI, but the Mark X was cheaper by far. The stock has a Monte Carlo, less than classic, and white line spacers for butt and grip cap. The spacers will go, and I'll have to live w/ the Monte Carlo. A very interesting click adjustable Redfield aperture sight sits on back, with a hooded, brass faced post out front, very classy.
As the mag box is short, cartridge OAL is limited, and some brief experiments with spitzers v. round nose seems to indicate that the RN's are going to shoot better, possibly cause the jump to the rifling is less, I dunno.
I do know that my first 3 rd group of 200 gr Nosler Partitions at 100 yds plunked into exactly 1 ". I could not repeat it with the two followup groups, but it outshot the lighter bullets easily. The lighter 150, 165 and 180 gr loads I'd worked up did not do as well. Recoil, especially w/ the 200 wa a bit brisk, and I will drop the load a grain to try and help, but is not really a bench rifle and I can live w/ it I guess.
Almost to pretty to hunt it, but I will. I always wanted a Mannlicher stocked rifle.
