Interarms .30-06 Bolt Action

Hey all,

I have an opportunity to buy an Interarms .30-06 bolt action rifle. I don't know the specific model, although from the pictures it looks similar to a Remington 700. A family member (cousin) is selling it, so I know it's been treated well, and not used much.

I'm wondering if it's a decent rifle to start taking up some longer range shooting with (not looking for a competition rifle by any means - just something to maybe take me out beyond a few hundred yards and still hit with better than 'hunting' accuracy). Would this rifle be worth considering, or is Interarms not worth the trouble? Thanks for you help!

I remember handling new Interarms Mausers back in the 80's and I think if the price is right, you will be buying a good rifle.

If you know its previous owner Why not. Not sure but I thought Howa barreled actions were used by Interarms. That's good. Being a 30-06 That's a universal big game cartridge no doubt.. As far as its scope That can always be changed out later on for something more suitable if you need too. Otherwise the asking price wanted I think its a fair price in today's market place. Maybe its gun case and a box of shells can be thrown in to seal the deal.

Interarms

Interarms for a while imported the Mark X family of Mauser type rifles, "Serbian Mausers" if you will. The Mark X's were made by Zastava and were very solid modern mausers that could be had for fair prices. I myself would rather have a Mark X than any of the price point poly rifles available at present. That's just me.

But.....not sure what you have.....if it is indeed a Rem 700 type action, it is not a Mark X.

The MarkX is a working man's rifle for sure. Nothing fancy but it'll get the job done every time. Good hunting rifles that can be a building block to a nice custom.

As said it should be a Mauser 98 action, which is a bit different from a M700 action.

Thanks guys! Pretty sure you're right that it's a Mauser action. The first picture I saw of it looked vaguely like a Model 700, but it was just one side profile picture. I think I will be picking the rifle up!

I believe you are describing an Interarms MKX. These were made in Yugoslavia and assembled (partly) in England (and are engraved as such). They are a commercial Mauser action, are well made, durable, reliable and generally accurate. They are drilled and tapped for scope bases as well as receiver sights. The 4 X 30 scope is probably not a great one - you'd be happier with a 3-9 X 40 or 3-9 X 50 scope. Leupold makes sight bases to fit the FN Mauser that will also fit the Interarms MK X. For the purchase price you mentioned, you will have an excellent centerfire rifle that will make you very happy.

Most definitely a Mauser type action. Did it look like this one.
sorry.. working on getting pic to upload.

Would highly recommend one. They are as solid, rugged and dependable as any gun ever made. The actions can be a little rough, and they are rarely target grade accurate, but more than enough for a hunting rifle. Hard to beat them for a quality action for the money.

FWIW, they are very commonly used by gunsmiths as the foundation for custom builds, especially where a rugged dependable rifle is wanted. At one time it was possible to buy just the action with no stock or barrel just for this purpose.

I used to own this custom in 338-06. I've owned a couple of others in the past in both 30-06 and 7mm magnum.

If you pull the action from the stock, please post a pic of the receiver. I'm interested in the area beneath the stockline. Those post-WW II Mausers are supposed to be finished rather well.

JMR - awesome rifle! Looking at the action on yours I am certain it is the Mauser-type action now.

I will post some pics when I get it. It will be a while now as the rifle is back home in NY and I won't be able to get it until I go home on leave.

Edited to add: talked to the seller again. We've agreed on the sale, and he says the barrel is actually marked as manufactured in England. Should be an interesting gun to pick up!

Remington brought these rifles in, roll marked as "Remington 798" for standard length actions and Remington 799 for short actions in .223, .22 hornet, and 7.62x39.

They dropped the line when they realized that they were competing with no one but themselves.

I briefly had one that was not marked as MK X or Remington, but simply 'Zastava'.

They are all identical except for cosmetics and all are fine post war Mausers. The only thing I could find to dislike was the stamped sheet metal thumb safety. At the right price, you can't get a better rifle.

If I could only own one type of bolt action rifle it would either be a 98 Mauser like the Interarms or a similar action like the pre64 Winchester 70. For $350 you would be getting quite a bit more gun than you could buy for the same price at the local gun store.

The only reason I don't own more of them is because I'm a lefty.

Herters once sold their Model J9 which I believe was the same rifle or similar. Perhaps someone is familiar with them and could enlighten me.

I have an Interarms Mark X in .308. It has a .20" barrel & full length stock.(manlicher style) The only thing I did to it was have a trigger job done. (not really needed , but I am fussy) It is a consistent sub 1 " 3 shot rifle that I paid $300.00 for 8 years ago. It even likes plain Rem. Core Lokt bullets. Worked out real well for me. It has a very good chance at being a great deal.

Yup. They are great rifles. I have two Chuck Daly actions, a Mini-Mauser in .223 and a full-size L-70 in .25-06 that shoots three-shot bug-holes with 100gr off-the-shelf Remington junk.

The innards could use a smoothing out, but the finish is otherwise pretty nice.

Pic of said bug-hole.
